UNITED NATIONS
  • BACKGROUND
  • UN replace the League of Nation, which was formed
    at 1919 after W.W 1.
  • The League was unsuccessful to prevent the
    outbreak of W.W 11.
  • UN initiated byPresident Franklin Delano
    Roosevelt of the United States and PM Winston
    Churchill of Britain.
  • T/fore, after W.W- 50 countries met at San
    Francisco and signed the United Charter.
  • Officially existed in 24Oct 1945

PURPOSE PRINCIPLE
  • Maintain the international peace and security
  • Encourage the co-operation and friendly
    relationship
  • Protects human rights irrespective of colour,
    sex, race and language.
  • UN members have to fulfill in good faith their
    charter obligation.
  • Settle any disputes by peaceful way.
  • UN resp to ensure, the non members also follow
    the principle of UN

6 major organs in UN
  • 1- The General Assembly
  • - Represents by 185 member states and each has
    one vote.
  • Almost the same as the world Parliament.
  • Will be held once a year.
  • 2- The economics and social council
  • 54 members elected 3 years term by G.A.
  • To promote higher standards of living, find
    solution to solve problems in economy and social
    Promote Universal respect, human rights and
    fundamental freedom of all.

  • 3- The security Council
  • 15 members and 5 of these are permanent members.
  • All the permanent members have veto power.
  • Resp. to settle any disputes by peaceful means.
  • 4- The trusteeship council
  • Its tasks is supervising the administration of
    trust territories to ensure those non-independent
    countries is well administered.
  • 5 permanent members of Security council.

  • 4- International Court of Justice
  • Known as World Court and the tasks are to settle
    any disputes between the members and giving
    advisory opinion to the UN.
  • Consisted of 15 judges who are elected by G.A and
    S.C
  • All trial will be held in Hague, Netherlands.
  • 5- The secretariat
  • To serves all the organs of UN.
  • Lead by Sec-General
  • Around 8,900 staffs in New York and all over the
    world.

MALAYSIA IN The UN
  • 1965 and 1989- was elected as a member of
    Security Council.
  • Malaysia stands for human rights in United
    nation- ex.- Tibet people, Palestinian, apartheid
    system in S. Africa.
  • Drug issue- 1987 Dr Mahathir was elected as a
    Chairperson of Intl. Drug Conf.
  • Antarctica issues and PM pointed out that
    Antarctica and its natural resources were part of
    human heritage and should be put under a wider
    group of countries.
  • Peace keeping efforts.

Benefits that Msia gains
  • Health- WHO- overcome diseases and ilness
  • Food- FOA and IFDA- increase a food production by
    encouraging technical and agricultural
    development.
  • Econ.science and education- UNESCO sent its
    scientist in helping Msia to do research in this
    area.
  • World Bank- helped Malaysia to develop after
    independence.
