Title: STLP Scrapbook
1James R. Allen Primary
2James R. Allen Primary
- James R. Allen Primary is located in Brandenburg,
Kentucky. We are the only primary school in
Meade County. Our school has over 625 students
in kindergarten through third grade.
3Population Diversity
- Being in a rural area, our school population is
probably not as culturally diverse as more urban
areas in the state. Our STLP consists of 29
female members and 21 male members. Our students
range in age from 6-9.
4Population Diversity
- We have students with a wide range of academic
abilities from Gifted/Talented to Special
Education. We are a Title 1 school meaning that
over half of our school population receives free
and reduced lunch.
5Recruitment
- At the beginning of the school year, Mrs. Doutaz
met with all 3rd grade students in the gymnasium
and gave an explanation of what STLP was.
Students were told about activities that students
had done the previous year in STLP. Morning
announcements urged interested students to
consider joining STLP. - Even though we had a test for eligibility, all
interested students were allowed to become
members, i.e., those who returned their
permission slip and took the test.
6Recruitment
- Since some students are not able to stay after
school because of transportation issues, some
projects are completed during school hours to
accommodate those students.
7Learning Partnerships
- Our STLP students traveled by bus to share their
project K is for Kentucky with the 4th graders
at our neighboring elementary school. They
happened to be studying Kentucky at that time.
Our students also handed out brochures they
created to accompany this project.
8Community Awareness
- Our STLP students contribute an article to the
JRA newsletter that is sent home with all our
students for their families. Each month,
students locate and organize information on the
topic selected and contribute it to our Family
Resource coordinator who inserts it into the
newsletter for us. - Want to view one of our JRA newsletters?

9Instructional Projects
- Our STLP Showcase project from 2005-2006 was
based on an instructional project completed by
all 2nd grade students. Students researched a
Famous American and created a PPT based on that
information. Our STLP students expanded upon
that by adding more information about the Famous
Americans they selected and added a test for
participants to take afterwards using the CPS.
This project was presented at the district,
regional, and state competitions.
10Instructional Projects
- Our STLP Showcase project for 2006-2007 was also
based on an instructional project for 3rd grade
students. Our STLP students created a PPT about
our state naming an important fact about Kentucky
for each letter of the alphabet entitled K is
for Kentucky. The STLP also created an
interactive map of Kentucky to accompany this
project.
- This project was presented at the district and
regional competitions.
11Leadership Opportunities
- Our STLP has participated in several video
production contests. In 2006, we created a video
for the Reel School video contest. The topic was
Internet Safety. Those students researched
internet safety tips, videotaped themselves, and
put the video together using Windows Movie Maker.
- We received 3rd place in the state for our entry.
Those students traveled to KTLC in March 2006 to
receive their award.
12Leadership Opportunities
- We also had students create a video for the KYVL
PSA video contest in 2006. Our students
developed a storyboard, took digital photos, and
pieced together their video, which included
narration.
We received 3rd place in the state for our entry.
Those students traveled to the 2006 STLP awards
to receive their award.
13Learning Partnerships
- We recently submitted a video to Reel School for
their video contest for 2007. The topic was
Assistive Technology. Several STLP students met
with our schools OT who demonstrated different
types of assistive technology. We created a
video that focused on one of our students and how
she uses different types of AT in her day.

15Community Awareness
- In December 2006, our STLP students traveled to
Medco Nursing Home to sing Christmas carols.
Prior to our visit, the students created
Christmas messages on the computer that were
handed out to the residents during our visit.
16Business and Community Partnerships
- Our STLP helps us earn points/money from
FundingFactory by sorting and packaging items,
such as cell phones and printer cartridges to be
sent to them for recycling. By redeeming our
points, we can earn different pieces of computer
equipment/technology that we need. Students can
also earn pizza parties, doughnut parties, etc.
for STLP by recycling these objects, as well.
Our students distributed flyers to area
businesses to encourage them to donate used
cartridges to our cause.
17Using Technology
- Our STLP students have worked together on
numerous projects using technology. - Several students have worked with Ms. Goff, one
of our teachers, on designing a webpage.
18Using Technology
- Students learned to use a digital camera,
download pictures, and how to operate a video
camera. Students took pictures for classroom
teachers and for the schools yearbook. - Students more familiar with camera technology
were able to assist students who had never
operated these pieces of equipment.
19Using Technology
- Students learned how to insert questions and
answers into a CPS and use it with others for
assessment purposes.
20Technology Assistance
- STLP students provide technology assistance to
students and teachers throughout our school. - Students have set-up the laptop and projector for
teachers to use. - Students have rescued substitute teachers who
need assistance logging onto the computers in the
classroom.
21Technology Assistance
- STLP volunteers help maintain the schools
computer lab. Each morning they straighten up
the lab. They make sure headphones are plugged
in and hung-up, they push-in chairs, throw away
garbage, etc. They log onto the computers for
other students. - These students also install programs and prepare
the computers in the lab for kindergarten and
first grade classes, when necessary.
22Technology Assistance
- STLP students have also assisted kindergarten
students by guiding them through the Accelerated
Reader program. The older students assisted the
younger students in typing in their names and
passwords, and locating the title of their book.
23Participation - District
- Our STLP has performed numerous duties at the
Meade County District STLP showcases. Weve had
students create digital art, display showcases,
serve as cyber-reporters, serve as showcase
associates, and present.
24Participation Regional
- We took several STLP students to the Regional
Technology Showcase at WKU in February 2006 and
November 2006. Some students assisted with the
showcase presentation, while other students made
presentations independently.
25Participation State - KTLC
- We took these students to KTLC in March 2006.
Some students presented their showcase, while
other students visited booths and received an
award from Reel School.
26Participation State - STLP
These students were selected to attend the STLP
state competition in Lexington in May 2006. They
presented their showcase The More You Learn, the
More You Earn.
These students attended the STLP awards in May
2006 in Lexington. They received third place in
the KYVL PSA competition.

30Future Projects
- We are fortunate to be moving into a new school
next school year. We will have amazing new
technology and many opportunities to explore and
learn. - Later this school year, our STLP students will be
sharing their K is for Kentucky project with
the 1st and 3rd graders when they are learning
about Kentucky as part of their curriculum. - All 3rd graders will be using the brochure
template that STLP created to design their own
brochures on Kentucky.
31Future Projects
- Other future plans for STLP include
- designing an online virtual tour of our new
facility for parents and students - creating a brochure of our new facility for
parents, visitors, and new students - assisting with the creation of our schools
yearbook - developing student webpages
- assisting teachers with advanced technology in
our new building - creating advertisements for our Fall Festival to
show during announcements to new students and
kindergarteners to entice them to attend
