Boundaries
Mentor vs. Protégé The professor published the
student's words as his own. What's wrong with
that? By THOMAS BARTLETT and SCOTT SMALLWOOD Dway
ne D. Kirk was proud of his paper, and with good
reason It was the first time his nameand his
name alone had appeared atop a scholarly
article. He had spent two months doing research
and writing, carefully considering each example,
weighing every word. Now, after all that work,
here was something, he says, that he could
"really call my own."
So he was understandably taken aback when, a year
later, he saw his words below someone else's
name. And not just a sentence or two, but
paragraph after paragraph, all lifted
verbatim. What's more, the scholar who
had appropriated his work was his mentor, Charles
J. Arntzen, a professor of plant biology at
Arizona State University at Tempe.

Review Blasts Professors for Plagiarism by
Graduate Students By PAULA WASLEY An
investigating committee at Ohio University has
called for the dismissal of the chairman of the
department of mechanical engineering and another
faculty member at the Russ College of Engineering
and Technology after finding evidence of "rampant
and flagrant plagiarism" by graduate students in
the department that took place over more than 20
years. The committee's report is the latest
development in the university's continuing
investigation of allegations brought by a former
graduate student, Thomas A. Matrka, who asserted
that faculty members had encouraged or ignored
widespread cheating and plagiarism within the
department.

Dr. Jekyll
Emory University psychiatrist accused of conflict
of interest Dr. Charles B. Nemeroff failed to
report a third of the income he received from
companies whose drugs he was evaluating, a
congressional investigation finds. By Denise
Gellene, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers and
Thomas H. Maugh II, Los Angeles Times Staff
Writers October 04, 2008 A prominent Emory
University psychiatrist received at least 2.8
million in consulting fees from companies whose
drugs he was evaluating and failed to report a
third of it, congressional investigators studying
medical conflicts of interest said Friday. The
allegations against Dr. Charles B. Nemeroff, the
latest in a series of such charges, are the most
striking to emerge from the probe, which seems
likely to alter the cozy relationships between
prominent academics and the drug industry.

AstraZeneca's Sex-for-Studies Seroquel Scandal
Did Research Chief Bias the Science? By Jim
Edwards February 25th, 2009 An AstraZeneca
executive in charge of clinical research on
Seroquel had sexual affairs with a researcher and
a study writer, plaintiffs in a Florida lawsuit
claim. Dr. Wayne MacFadden, AZs former US
medical director for Seroquel and director of
clinical research in CNS had affairs with a
clinical researcher who authored publications
favorable to Seroquel, and a medical marketer who
promoted Seroquel through medical publications
and other means. In addition to his sexual
involvement with the Parexel program manager, it
appears he Macfadden also provided her with
prescription painkillers. Macfadden has admitted
to additional sexual affairs with a clinical
researcher assistant at AstraZeneca and a
clinical researcher in California also involved
in the Seroquel clinical trials.

Professor Pressured To Sleep With Student For
Good Course Evaluation JUNE 27, 2006 ISSUE
4226 FAYETTEVILLE, ARAlan Gilchrist, an
associate professor of English literature at the
University of Arkansas infamous for his tough
grading standards and dry lecturing style, was
coerced into sleeping with an undergraduate on
Monday in order to earn a good course evaluation.
"My tenure's on the line here, so I allowed a
student to take advantage of me," said an
emotional Gilchrist of the experience, which he
hopes will earn him at least six "very much
enjoyed" responses on the eight-item evaluation
form.
"I told myself it would be just this once, and
that it would be over soon, and that it wouldn't
be that bad, but I was used. And I can't stop
showering." Sources said that the unidentified
student is one of the most popular and
charismatic on campus, raising questions about
possible abuse of power.

Noahs Dilemma
  • Who has Noah identified as a mentor?
  • What shapes a trainee/mentor relationship?
  • Should Isabelles plan be plausible?
  • Is Noah ready to receive a PhD? Why? Why not?
