CVUExtra-curricular/Co-curricular Program
Needs7/8/2002
  • Ideas for Today and Tomorrow

2
Charge of the committee
  • Examine the co/extra-curricular programs at CVU
and propose changes on how to expand options for
all students. The group will be guided by the
    following principles
  • Develop and expand programs to meet the needs of
a diverse student body including those programs
that would be considered extra curricular in
nature and those which are tied to the curriculum
    such as school trips.
  • Develop systems to support those programs that
    are the most cost effective
  • Develop a list of options and pros and cons

What do we have now?
Before we look to add or change program, lets
identify what we already have in place. On the
next few slides is a list of activities that are
funded by the budget, followed by a list of
volunteer led clubs, limited participation
activities, and student trips.

Student Travel at CVU
  • Current major trips Greece, France, Costa Rica,
    Habitat for Humanity, Holocaust.
  • Freshman Core, Arts, Languages, and Social
Studies courses also perform day trips.
  • Extended trips limit number of participants, must
    apply and be accepted.
  • Cost on extended trips is prohibitive to some
    students participation and causing potential
    equity/diversity issues.
  • As CVUs enrollment has grown, so has the number
    of applicants for travel programs.
  • Students have been turned down for the Greek,
French, and Habitat for Humanity trips.
  • Committee recommends
  • Consider increasing frequency or number of trips.
  • Establishment of a committee to oversee trips
taken and how funds can be raised to make travel
    available to all students.

9
How Did We Get Here?
  • If students are interested in an activity or club
that does not exist, they can create one via
    existing application process
  • To create or drop a financially (CVU budget)
    supported activity
  • Add and drop guideline/procedure is used.

10
Things to Consider
  • Almost every space used for co/extra curricular
activities is also used during the school day as
    a teaching space.
  • Proposed spaces and facilities would allow for
increased student activity after school, as well
as improved teaching spaces during the school
    day.
  • Some of the current spaces are not adequate for
    what we presently offer.

11
Recommendations to Support Current Program
  • Soundproof performance rooms-instrumental/choral/d
    rama
  • Gymnasium allow all teams reasonable practice
    times/Teaching space/Intramurals/Large meeting
    area
  • Expand Locker Rooms inadequate space
  • All Weather Track unable to host track meets
past 2 years (01-02) reduces opportunities to
    compete.
  • Extra Playing Field allow for adequate practice
    space, rotate fields, student safety.
  • Outdoor Storage Space/Public Restrooms.
  • Indoor storage space-performance/athletics-allow
access to performance materials for all
    curricular areas
  • Additional performance area-chorus/band currently
    share

12
Recommendations to Expand Opportunities
  • Gymnasium
  • Multi-purpose Room
  • Fitness Center
  • Dance Studio
  • Two new playing fields (130 x 85 yds)
  • Locker room expansion
  • Tennis Courts (4)
  • All Weather Track
  • Possible expanded sports team/intramural options
    (i.e. football, volleyball, rugby, ultimate
    frisbee, tennis)

13
Performance Areas
  • Add or retro-fit performance areas to be
    soundproof.
  • Small break out rooms for individual rehearsal,
    dressing rooms, etc.
  • Large assembly area
  • Currently noise from practice areas travels
    throughout the building.
  • Currently only large spaces are available.
  • Auditorium is often needed for assembly purposes,
causing classes held there to be moved or
    cancelled.

14
Gymnasium
  • Practice times are often very early or very late.
Some teams get very little practice time.
  • No space currently available in winter for
    intramurals
  • With addition of new core and increased
enrollment, new teaching space is needed.
  • Create another large assembly space for students.
  • Allow all teams reasonable practice times.
  • Provide space for intramurals.
  • Increased teaching space.
  • Large assembly area.

15
Locker Rooms
  • Increase locker room and team rooms for increased
    number of students and athletes.
  • Provide spaces for CVU and visiting teams.
  • Currently students use bathrooms and classrooms
    due to lack of space.
  • Teams assemble in training room, hallways or
    fitness areas.

16
All Weather Track
  • Provide safe, reliable area for students to
    practice and compete.
  • Space for community to use for fitness purposes
  • Potential space for middle school track meets.
  • CVU Track and Field team unable to host meet for
past two years, loss of competition.
  • Current track poses some safety concerns.
  • CVU students/athletes unable to measure
themselves on a daily basis with adequate surface.

17
Two Additional Playing Fields
  • Allow for adequate and safe, practice and game
    fields.
  • Fields could be rotated annually to allow for
    recovery from excess use.
  • Increased field space could allow for outdoor
intramurals and increase in athletic teams.
  • Current fields are overused.
  • Practice space is limited for number of teams we
    currently have.
  • Playing fields deteriorate quickly with no rest
    time.
  • Field space currently limits after school
intramurals, and potential new sport offerings.

18
Indoor Storage Space
  • Storage space for performance areas such as
    drama, music, and arts.
  • Storage space for athletic teams and student
    athletes on a daily basis.
  • Access to equipment for all curricular areas.
  • Current space is inadequate, potential practice
and dressing rooms are full of stored materials.
  • Students must store equipment in House Offices,
advisory offices, or carry all day.
  • Equipment is often unavailable due to inability
    to access quickly.

19
Outdoor Storage/Public Restrooms.
  • Storage for outdoor teaching equipment, and
    athletic equipment.
  • Public facilities for students, athletes, and
    spectators.
  • Current storage facility is inadequate.
  • Students, athletes, and spectators must enter
building and find way to a rest room facility
causing extra wear on already burdened areas.

20
This proposal will allow
  • Increase participation
  • Increase safety and decreased liability issues
  • Community access
  • Create adequate facilities for current Division I
    programs.
