  • Master Planning is an analytical and creative
    activity that results in a coordinated set of
    decisions (the plan) about actions to be taken to
    accomplish stated goals.
  • Master Planning is aligning facilities assets to
    support strategic goals.

What is a Master Plan?
  • Establishes the physical framework for the long
    term evolution of a campus
  • Establishes a vision embodied in guiding
    principles
  • Ensures the enhancement of unique attributes of
    an area
  • Represents a consensus about underlying values
    and principles to govern area development
  • Serves as a living document sustained through
    continuous, open, and inclusive discussion

Master Plan Objectives
  • Perform a space needs utilization study to
    evaluate current space, to determine suitability
    of current space and to establish future space
    needs for specific academic programs.
  • Establish growth potential and/or limitations of
    all academic programs and spatial requirements
    for existing and new programs.
  • Evaluate the use and availability of all land and
    real property.
  • Define the physical resources required to sustain
    and advance the Universitys missions, goals and
    objectives.

  • Describe and dimension physical improvements for
    all proposed academic, residential and services
    spaces of the campus.
  • Determine and coordinate the location of existing
    and future campus improvements to achieve a
    functional, attractive and comprehensive design.
  • Establish a well conceived physical framework,
    flexible enough to accommodate changing
    circumstances and conditions not foreseeable when
    the plan was formulated.

  • Guilford College remains committed as a liberal
    arts education institution.
  • Guilford College also recommits itself to the
    excellenceof undergraduate education and to
    teaching as its
  • core business.
  • Guilford College remains committed to its Quaker
    heritage.
  • Guilford College intends to expand its academic
    community through increased enrollment and
    partnerships with other colleges and
    universities. With a planned total enrollment of
    3,300 by 2010.
  • As Guilford grows, it will not just become
    larger, but also increase faculty and core
    selections.

  • Guilford College recognizes the need to pay for
    this plan through an increase in financial
    resources.
  • Operational Objectives
  • A Balanced operating budget by 2006.
  • New Capital Campaign to raise 75 million during
    2008-2014.
  • Grow the colleges endowment value to 75 million
    by 2010.
  • Upgrade facilities, infrastructure, and physical
    plant.
  • Operational revenues are anticipated to increase
    between 2005 and 2010.
  • Guilford College is committed to future improved
    facilities, particularly with residence halls and
    a comprehensive renovation of Founders Hall, the
    campus student center.

  • In 1998, Guilford College moved to Division III,
    NCAA athletics. In this planning term, Guilford
    college continued to strive to reach its full
    potential in Division III athletics.
  • Guilford College expects to fulfill the
    strategies within the existing physical campus
    area without significant land acquisitions or
    expansions.
  • The college expects the Master Plan
    recommendations to be sensitive to and enhance
    the campus context. This especially applies to
    the materials (brick), scale, proportions, etc.
    of the architecture and open spaces.
  • The campus green shall be preserved as a unifying
    open space with no infill building permitted.
  • The lakes, natural wooded and marsh areas of the
    campus shall remain undeveloped, though the meadow

    elements of the campus and shall be preserved.
