• On March 13, 1989, the most intense geomagnetic
  storm on record occurred. The Great Geomagnetic
  storm of 1989 resulted in a power failure,
  effecting 6 million customers of the Hydro Quebec
  Power Company. Several power plants in the
  United States were also brought to the brink of
  failure.
