Title: Attention Pre Com Students

1
Attention Pre Com Students!!
  • Pre-registration begins October 31st!!
  • Its time to meet with your advisor to discuss
    your Spring 2005 schedule
  • You will be receiving notification via a letter
    by email
  • Read this letter CAREFULLY since there are strict
deadlines and procedures you must follow in order
    to be advised.

2
Why are we talking about this?
  • Some of you are new at this
  • others could use a refresher on How to Prepare
for Advising (and there are changes!)
  • there are so many PCOM majors
  • you must follow these guidelines or you will
not be advised until after the deadlines have
    passed!!

3
No One Likes Me . . .
  • That may not be true!
  • Maybe you just have not set up your email account
  • Maybe it is set up but full so no new email can
    come in.
  • Set up and maintain your UNCW email accountyou
are hanging yourself if you dont!

4
What do I need to do before I see an advisor?
  • Go to the Dept. of Communication Studies website
    www.uncw.edu/com/
  • Look at some of the specialty paths you can take
as you continue in the major
  • Contemplate your personal and professional goals
  • Think about which courses that are offered that
will help you begin to move in the direction
    youd like

5
OK, I think I found one or two areas Id like to
go into, now what?
  • Thats great! But you still have to complete the
    gateway courses successfully
  • Bs or better in COM 105 and COM 200

6
Preparing for advising Getting the degree audit
  • Go to SEAWEB and then to your Student Information
    and Registration page
  • Enter your SID and your PIN
  • Download and/or print your DEGREE AUDIT- YOU MUST
HAVE THIS IN ORDER TO BE ADVISED

7
Preparing for advisingReading the audit
  • Read your degree audit
  • It will tell you how many hours you have
completed, how many you are attempting, and how
many hours you may still need for basic studies
    requirements
  • Spend quality time with your degree audit you
    really need to!

8
Preparing for advisingPicking courses and
sections
  • Here you navigate until you get to Spring 2005,
    then
  • Communication Studies, then
  • The list of courses that will be taught
  • Remember you still cant sign up for COM majors
    only courses

9
Do the same for any other subject you may need
  • If you need a life science with a lab, you might
look at BIO (Biology), and so on
  • Remember that it is our responsibility to review
the schedule you propose and offer advice about
your progress toward the degree and the potential
    benefit of elective courses.

10
Preparing for advisingPreparing schedules
  • Sample Schedule
  • Alternate Schedule
  • Your alternate courses must be sufficient to
provide a plan C if you do not earn a B or
better in the gateway course you are now taking.
  • In other words, have a backup schedule already
    worked out

Color Coding is Optional
11
What if I dont have a schedule?
  • No materials or prep, no advising, no exceptions.
  • This means you will have to come back later with
materials and perhaps register later than you
    could have
  • This is not good

12
New sign up procedure Know your hours
completed
  • You must come in for advising during the week
that corresponds with your hours completed.
  • Hours completed does NOT include the hours you
    are currently taking.
  • You can find the hours you have completed on your
    degree audit.

13
What happens if I just show up?
  • If you come before you are allowed to be advised
you will be asked to come back later.
  • No exceptions will be made.

14
What happens if I miss my time?
  • If you come after your week to be advised you
will only be advised if time permits within the
    scheduled advising hours.
  • No exceptions will be made.

15
Here is the schedule

16
Advising Schedule
  • Advising hours this year will be Monday and
Wednesday from 12-5 pm and Tuesday and Thursday
    from 1-5 pm.
  • Advising will be done on first come, first served
    basis
  • Because your advisors have job responsibilities
this is the only time they are allowed to advise.
    Please adjust your schedule accordingly.

17
During Advising
  • Be polite. You are unique but not special.
  • Take good notes on suggestions offered
  • Focus on academic issues during this busy
timeask to schedule additional time for other
    issues.
  • You and your advisor will co-sign the advising
    form
  • You will receive your 4 digit PIN

18
OK, so what happens when I am done being advised?
  • You will need to get to a computer and register
  • Please DOUBLE CHECK your degree audit after you
have registered to make sure everything is A-OK
  • Remember you still cannot sign up for COM majors
    only classes!!
  • Those completing COM 200 you will not be a
major until you have finished the course and
final grades are posted-that will be in December

19
If you follow these directions
  • you will experience a happy-ending
  • possibly nirvana
  • and so will your advisors
