What is STAA?
  • STAA is a charity working in the field of Arts
    Health.
  • STAA provides creative opportunities for older
    people with mental health problems including
    dementia their carers in Sandwell, West
    Midlands.
  • In 2005 STAA won a Positive Practice Award for
    its work in Older Peoples mental health from
    NIMHE (National Institute for Mental Health in
    England).

STAAs History.
  • STAA was set up to help address the creative,
    social and spiritual needs of older people with
    mental health problems dementia.
  • STAA was born out of a report commissioned by
    Sandwell Social Services in 1995.
  • STAA started with a grant from Sandwell Social
    Services and West Midlands Arts.
  • STAA became a charity in 2001.

Who is STAA?
  • A team of 10 artists -specialists in different
    art forms, they work on a freelance basis for
    STAA.
  • Sharon Baker- Co-ordinator who manages STAA on a
    day to day basis.
  • STAA has an advisory group board of trustees.
  • STAAs patron is Professor Carl Chinn O.B.E.

Partnership working.
  • STAA is part of the network of secondary level
    services for older people with mental health
    needs- people already in the system.
  • STAA works with CPNs, OTs, psychologists, nurses,
    social workers, care managers and other charities
    such as Age Concern and Alzheimers.
  • STAA is an essential part of the overall network
    of support available comment from a CPN.

STAAs Philosophy.
  • STAA aims to enrich the quality of life and
    enhance the well being of older people by
    providing positive arts experiences.
  • STAA believes that engaging in a creative
    activity can bring benefits to the persons
    involved such as promoting feelings of self
    esteem and well being.

STAAs creative sessions who are they for?
  • People with dementia at all stages of their
    illness.
  • Older people with other mental health problems
    ranging from depression to chronic conditions.
  • Carers of older people with mental health
    problems and dementia.

People STAA works with in a preventative way.
  • People in the early stages of dementia
  • Supporting people to live in their own homes for
    as long as possible.
  • Supporting peoples skills levels of
    functioning for as long as possible.
  • People recovering from mental illness
  • Supporting people to return home after a stay in
    hospital.
  • Supporting people to stay at home -no need for
    re-admittance to hospital.

STAAs creative sessions.
  • Activities for individuals on a one to one basis
    in their own homes based around their interests
    and hobbies. This is where our preventative work
    is focused.
  • Activities for groups in community, hospital or
    day centre settings.
  • Sessions are personalised and are designed around
    the interests and needs of the person or group.

  • Music singing, playing, listening.
  • Poetry creative writing.
  • Calligraphy.
  • Sculpture.
  • Pottery.

  • Photography video.
  • Reminiscence life story work.

Creative sessions-set up.
  • STAA receives written referrals from health and
    caring professionals, also from carers self
    referrals.
  • Aims are identified for each person taking part.
  • STAAs co-ordinator meets the person with
    carer/referral agency representative.
  • A programme of activities is agreed.

Creative Sessions- delivery.
  • The artist is selected according to art form
    chosen visits the person/ group.
  • Sessions happen once a week, fortnight or
    monthly.
  • Sessions can last anything between half an hour
    to 2 hours.
  • Sessions are reviewed and evaluated by measuring
    the effects of sessions against the aims
    identified at the beginning.

Benefits
  • Sessions maintain a persons mental health- they
    keep peoples spirits up.
  • Sessions alleviate symptoms of depression- people
    are diverted, focusing on the activity rather
    than their illness.
  • Give people a new purpose when starting a new
    hobby or revisiting an activity they may have
    stopped.
  • Sessions are part of the support package for a
    person being discharged from hospital.

Benefits
  • Sessions in peoples homes provide human contact,
    help to alleviate isolation, help in a weekly
    routine.
  • Activities get people to use the skills they
    still have- and slow down the decline of skills
    that people with dementia experience.
  • Sessions allow people to try new things and gain
    confidence in participating.
  • Carers can have sessions themselves as a respite
    for the caring role.

Evaluation
  • In 2004 STAAs work was independently evaluated
    by Professor David Jolley Kate Read of
    DementiaPlus West Midlands.
  • STAA has created 1996-2004 a high quality
    service.
  • The work of STAA goes across boundaries. It is
    used by Health and Social Servicesit is accessed
    through voluntary organisations, age related and
    cross cultural. This provides a sense of sharing
    and cohesion.

Costs and funding.
  • Costs depend on art form, a guideline 700 for
    10 individual sessions, 1500 for 12 group
    sessions.
  • STAAs sessions are delivered free of charge to
    participants in Sandwell.
  • STAAs budget is around 50K per year.
  • STAA gets a yearly grant of 20K from Sandwell MBC
    Social Inclusion Health.
  • The rest comes from donations and fundraising.
  • STAA works with around 150 people a year.

Comments from participants.
  • It lifts you out of depression, you have to keep
    your mind busy.
  • Its filled my life up and given me something
    else to think about.
  • It made me feel better and lifted my spiritsit
    was something different you know.
  • I like seeing other people I do! Because its
    like living on a desert island where I live.
