FUNCTIONS OF THE N.C.D.A
  • To review and monitor the conditions in Jamaica
    and regionally with respect to drugs which are
    being abused or misused with harmful effects
    which lead to numerous social problems.
  • Undertake measures to prevent this abuse and
    misuse of drugs and with other stakeholders deal
    with the resulting social problems.
  • Supply relevant information and advice on matters
    concerning drug abuse and misuse.

WORKING COMMITTEES
  • EPI AND RESEARCH - looks at the epidemiological
    trends and the current research relevant to our
    demand reduction programs.
  • INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION - informs our
    national public education programs and ensures
    that messages are relevant and accurate.
  • LEGISLATIVE - looks at how the law affects the
    drug abuser.

  • SECURITY- ensures that there is ongoing
    collaboration between the national demand and
    supply initiatives.
  • TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION - looks at the
    current TR modalities and their suitabilities
    for our national program.
  • ECONOMIC - looks at the possibility for
    especially recovering addicts to find meaningful
    employment or establish micro-enterprise.
  • FINANCE - ensures that acceptable financial
    practices as outlined in the FAA Act are adhered
    to.

INTEGRATED DEMAND REDUCTION PROGRAMME (IDER)
  • THE UNDERLYING PHILOSOPHY OF THE IDER PROGRAMME
    IS THAT DRUG ABUSE IS THE RESULT OF MANY
    INTERRELATED UNDERLYING PROBLEMS. THE APPROACH
    THEREFORE IS TO ATTEMPT TO SOLVE THE UNDERLYING
    PROBLEMS AND EITHER PREVENT DRUG USE OR REDUCE
    THE INCIDENTS OF DRUG ABUSE.

  • DETOX UNIT - U.H.W.I - 28 days program of
    detoxification overlapping with treatment.
  • PATRICA HOUSE - 3-4 months residential program
    based on the therapeutic community principle.
  • WARD 21 - U.H.W.I - 4-6 weeks program both in and
    outpatient. Also deals with dual diagnosis
    client.
  • BELLEVUE HOSPITAL - Unlimited stay to treat dual
    diagnosis patient.
  • DETOX UNIT - CORNWALL REGIONAL - Offers 4 weeks
    detoxification (in patient) and also counselling
    sessions.

    patient treatment (individual and family
    counselling)
  • William Chamberlain - 4-6 months program
    described as a working therapeutic community
    program
  • Teen Challenge - Six months to 1 year program
    which endeavour to help people become mentally
    sound, emotionally balanced, socially adjusted,
    physically well, and spiritually alive.
