• USSR becomes one of the mightiest powers on the
  planet, 2nd only to USA
• First to get a satellite in space
• Eventually helps other countries become communist
  (Cuba, etc.)
• Costs???? Millions of dead civilians
• Increased tensions between countries
• Cold War
