BACKGROUND
  • UZ 5 year strategic plan (2002-7) included
    emphasis on ICT competencies
  • Implemented the Campus Wide Computer Network
  • UZ Library embarked on building local databases
    to enhance access to local information grey
    literature

  • DATAD was introduced to UZ in 2000 by Association
    of African Universities (AAU) representative
  • Objective of DATAD was to provide information on
    African Theses Dissertations
  • UZ Library saw it as an opportunity to better
    manage its vast collection of theses
    Dissertations

AIMS OF DATAD
  • Contribute towards creation of conducive
    environment for research publication in Africa
    Universities
  • Create capacity in African Universities for
    collection, management dissemination of Theses
    Dissertations electronically

  • Provide visibility improve visibility of
    African scholars work
  • Provide support for other AAU programmes which
    aim at capacity building in area of research
    networking of institutions having access to a
    central source of information

DATAD IMPLEMENTATION
  • Management team made up of staff from the
    Academic Registry, deans of faculties, IT staff
    library staff was formed in 2000
  • Librarian was the overall leader of the project
  • Faculty staff was to help sell the project to
    their respective faculties
  • Special Collections Librarian was local DATAD
    coordinator

IMPLEMENTATION CONTD
  • Proceeds generated from accessing DATAD sale of
    CDs would further DATAD activities
  • UZ would earn US2.00 for every record entered
  • November 2001, DATAD project was launched at UZ
  • Data entry began in 2002 after staff received
    training from AAU/DATAD representatives

ASSIGNMENT OF TASKS
  • Special Collections responsible for theses
    collections and movement
  • Cataloguing dept responsible for quality control
  • Library ICT dept responsible for scanning
    abstracts, database merging/copying CD burning
    technical support
  • Students were hired for data entry

SOFTWARE USED
  • Procite and Omnipage used to develop DATAD
  • UZ received these software packages equipment
    from the AAU
  • Computer, scanner

DATA ENTRY
  • May 2002, 550 records had been created
  • January 2003, 1 040 records submitted to DATAD
    headquarters in Ghana
  • Currently 1 374 UZ records in DATAD
  • 500 records ready for uploading
  • 300 records from 10 faculties still to be input
  • DATAD searchable at httpwww.aau.org/datad/databas
    e/

DATAD LAUNCHED
  • April 2003 DATAD team from University of Zimbabwe
    participated in the launch of the combined DATAD
    in Ghana

ELECTRONIC THESES AND DISSERTATIONS
  • DATAD database provided abstract only
  • 2003 University of Zimbabwe Library went a step
    further to provide full text Electronic Theses
    and Dissertations (ETDs)
  • ETD database (ETD-db) open source software
    developed at Virginia used
  • ETD database is an extension of DATAD

ADVANTAGES of ETDs
  • Users have access to full text theses 24 hrs a
    day
  • Graduate research results now rapidly
    disseminated
  • Research output now visible

ETDs ON OPAC
  • In an effort to increase visibility, some of the
    ETDs now have been uploaded onto the Millennium
    Library System
  • Now accessible via Online Public Access Catalogue
  • Quick access, faster and efficient
