Palminder
Palminder is a post-16 learner taking the
Advanced Diploma in information technology. She
achieved excellent grades in her GCSEs and is
determined to work in the IT industry one
dayalthough she is unsure as to exactly what
sort of job she really wants at the moment. What
she does know is that it is going to require hard
work, but as she has energy to spare and an
inquisitive mind she is confident of being
successful! Palminder already uses IT in her
social life, keeping in touch with friends,
downloading music and movies and buying many of
the new clothes fashions on-line!

Work experience
Palminder really enjoyed the multimedia and
digital projects unit and therefore jumped at the
chance to use her project to produce a virtual
tour of the college facilities. This meant
interviewing staff for suitable content, getting
to grips with some new software and then user
testing the virtual tour. Once completed, she
asked if she could make a presentation to the
college principal to seek permission for it to be
included on the college website and to her
amazement he said yes! Palminder arranged for
friends and family to visit the website and use
the virtual tour, completing a review pro-forma
she had produced to comment on its suitability
and ease of use. The feedback was positive,
although it did identify a few minor issues that
Palminder was able to rectify. Its still on
there a source of real pride for Palminder and
her family!
Palminder spent her work experience with a small
consultancy company who were trying to expand
their use of IT in their training division. They
wanted to offer on-line training as well as the
more traditional methods already being
used. Working with the IT Advisor, Palminder was
soon given a specific task of researching the
range of possible options for the company and
putting forward the strengths and weaknesses of
each of them, so the directors could choose the
best way forward. No pressure there
then! Palminder gave an on-line presentation to
the directors who then made an informed decision
as to the way forward. So impressed were they
with her IT skills and professionalism that they
asked Palminder if she was interested in being an
IT Apprentice with them.
