1950s
Lunch Party dress
Suit dress
  • Today we are going to focus on costume we would
use if we were setting a play in the 1950s
  • After the war in the 1950s there seemed no reason
why fashion shouldnt go on again as it did in
    the past, with clothes for
  • lunch parties
  • Cocktails
  • Dinner
  • The theatre
  • And no rules about what should be worn when
  • A designer of the time, Christian Dior, based his
fashion on letters producing the H line the A
    line and the Y line
  • Skirts were pencil slim or full, by the late 50s
they were shorter, with fuller ones worn over
    nylon petticoats stiff as lampshades

4
Genre
  • The genre of the play being performed will have
an impact on the costume used
  • -If the play was set in a school or if it was
about teenagers the actresses would wear poodle
skirts similar to the picture on the bottom right
and actors would wear tight trousers similar to
    the picture below.

5
Genre continued
  • If the characters in the play were going to a
dance or a meal out they would wear posh clothes.
Like the photo on the bottom right.(for women) or
    the tuxedo below. (for men)
  • If the characters were going about their everyday
    business the
  • women might wear tight leggings or a
skirt.(bottom left). And the men might wear
    similar to the photo below.

6
Conclusion
  • In conclusion costume shows different things
  • Including
  • when the play is set,
  • where it is set
  • and the characters personality.
  • Thank-you for watching
