Main Styles

• There are six main styles of Indian Classical
  Dance, from North to South. The theme is always
  hindu mythology and the performance comprises
  both expressive dance, with hand gestures, and
  pure dance, which is based on meaningless rythmic
  movements. The most popular Classical dance of
  the North is Kathak, which was influenced by
  persian culture of XIX centurys courts. A famous
  Southern style from the state of Tamilnadu,
  considered at the origin of other styles, is
  Bharata Natyam, which used to be performed in
  temples by women. Another Southern style, from
  the state of Kerala, is Kathakali, typically
  performed by men and mostly based on acting
  rather than dance. Other Classical Dance styles
  are Odissi, from the state of Orissa, Kuchipudi,
  from the state of Andhra Pradesh, and Manipuri,
  from the state of Manipur.
