What is Supplemental Instruction?
  • Definition Peer-facilitated academic support for
    historically difficult classes to improve by
    regularly scheduled out-of-class tutorial and
    review sessions

Supplemental Instruction at Pellissippi State
  • 1973 Supplemental Instruction began at
    University of Missouri at Kansas City
  • 2000 Pellissippi State faculty were trained by
    UMKC onsite
  • 2001 - 2007 A few sections began with SI, then
    it dwindled down to couple of Accounting classes
  • 2007 - 2008 Planning kick-off inservice for
    Fall, 08
  • MATH1130 is chosen for SI, since it is one of the
    historically difficult courses for students

How SI Works
  • The SI Coordinator identifies targeted courses,
    works with faculty and selects and trains SI
    Leaders.
  • Faculty members screen Leaders and suggest Leader
    candidates.
  • SI Leaders attend course lectures, take notes,
    complete the homework, and conduct two or three
    out-of-class sessions a week. The SI Leader is
    the model student who helps integrate course
    content with learning/studying strategies.

    CSIT1050, DSPW0800, DSPW0870, ENGL1010, MATH1010,
    MATH1130, SPAN1010
  • 18 Leaders with 15 instructors of 28 sections
    impacting 727 students on all 4 campuses

MATH 1130 Success Rates Fall, 2008
  • 6 sections with 206 students participated 367
    students were in nonparticpating sections.
  • A-D SI 65.6 vs. nonSI 63.2
  • A-C SI 62.1 vs. nonSI 57.5
