4Citizens of the 21st century need to think
critically and creatively, embrace diversity and
ambiguity, and create as well as consume
information. They need to be resourceful and
self-reliant, while also skilled at collaboration
and group process.
- --Framework For 21st Century Learning
5Creating 21st Century Learners
- Students will continue to need foundational
skills in language arts, math, science and social
studies. - It would be a disservice to our students, our
community and our nation not to continue strong
fine arts programs. - Time is and will continue to be a key variable
in what will be taught.
6What are 21st Century Skills?

7Empowering 21st Century Leaders
- What are community/business/workplace
expectations for our students? (Should we add to
or take away from the previous list?) - National, state and local agreement will need to
be reached on what a high school graduate should
know and what skills should be developed. - Professional development/training will remain
critical.
8Justifying 21st Century Expenditures
- Financial support, quality programs, proper
accountability all are necessary. - Accountability is not as simple as looking at
point-in-time test scores. - To be globally competitive means that we have to
invest in the resources (including education) to
make us competitive.
9Enrollment Projections
- Rockingham County and Harrisonburg schools will
continue to grow. - Accurate projections of the rate of student
growth continue to be difficult.
