  • First impressions count. It takes between 30 and
    120 seconds to formulate a first impression of
    someone.
  • As an employee of The University of Georgia you
    are representing not only yourself but the
    department, and the university in a professional
    manner.

What is the professional attire policy?
  • During traditional business hours, 8am to 5pm,
    Residence Hall Education and Services staff
    members are expected to dress in appropriate
    attire.
  • Exceptions If you obtain permission from your
    supervisor you are allowed to dress outside of
    appropriate attire during normal business hours.
    Typically this only happens when an activity you
    will engage in during hours requires more casual
    clothing.

Appropriate Attire Includes
  • Traditional Business classic suit or pant suit
  • Contemporary Business Casual slacks, sport coat,
    blazer, collard shirt/blouse, dresses,
    cotton-twill trousers or pants
  • UGA Apparel collard or polo shirt with
    University or Department logo
  • Shoes dressy or loafers

Inappropriate Attire Includes
  • Jeans
  • T-Shirts
  • Sweat Pants
  • Shorts
  • Tennis Shoes
  • Sneakers
  • Flip Flops
  • Under no circumstances is anything too short or
    in need of repair appropriate to wear.

What if you have a meeting on North Campus?
  • North Campus houses the Administrative offices
    for the Division of Student Affairs as well as
    the Presidents Office.
  • Please be on top of your professional image when
    meeting with these individuals on North Campus.
  • At times meetings or forums will be held in the
    Chapel, it is appropriate to dress in business
    attire in these situations as well.

The importance of Professional Conduct
  • It is important to maintain a positive attitude
    about yourself and your work.
  • This includes being conscience of who you are
    speaking to and what you are divulging.
  • This is a university town. It is not uncommon to
    see your students off campus and after hours.
  • Be professional in your interactions with them.
    Set clear boundaries with your students and
    communicate expectations.
  • You are part of a team.
  • Challenge and support is important in our work.
    If things are unclear, ask questions! Be
    respectful, have integrity and remember you are a
    role model for others and students!

The importance of Professional Conduct
  • Manage your time well.
  • Not only is managing your time important for your
    personal sanity. It is also important to be
    mindful of others time.
  • Understand what information and conversations are
    confidential.
  • If you are unsure, ask someone! Remember to use
    discretion with details, names, specifics until
    you are certain what is being discussed is or is
    not confidential information.
  • Communication is key!
  • Remember its often not what you say, but HOW you
    say it. Utilize resources to properly convey
    information.

Whos responsibility is professionalism anyways?
  • Its your responsibility to maintain your own
    level of professionalism. It is also your
    responsibility to hold others accountable for the
    standard at which we expect everyone to maintain.

Professionalism and Technology
  • It is not easy to decipher tone in emails. Be
    conscience of the language, content, and
    punctuation you use in emails. It is still a
    proper form of communication, so be aware!
  • It is also important to be conscience of our tone
    while speaking on the phone. Thought the person
    cannot see you, they can tell if youre smiling ?
    Speak clearly remember customer service is key!
