Definition of Worship
  • To worship is
  • to quicken (to give life or energy to) the
conscience by the holiness of God,
  • to feed the mind with the truth of God,
  • to purge the imagination by the beauty of God,
  • to open the heart to the love of God,
  • to devote the will to the purpose of God. (by
    William Temple)
  • God actively seeks worshipers.
  • What is worship?
  • Worship is our response to God's love.

4
The Object of Our Worship
  • The one true God is the God of Abraham, Isaac,
and Jacob the God whom Jesus Christ revealed.
  • To worship properly
  • We need to know Who He is.
  • To see who the Lord is brings us to confession.
  • To understand his grace is to understand our
    guilt.
  • So we worship the Lord not only because of who he
is, but also because of what he has done.

5
Priority of Worship
  • Worship -gt Service
  • The divine priority is worship first, service
    second.
  • Service as a substitute for worship is idolatry.
Activity is the enemy of adoration.
  • One grave temptation we all face is to run around
answering calls to service without ministering to
    the Lord himself.

6
Avenues into Worship
  • Silence To still the activity of the flesh so
that the activity of the Holy Spirit dominate.
  • Praise singing, shouting, dancing, rejoicing,
    adoring language of praise.
  • Wholehearted Worship (body, mind, spirit, emotion
    in balance)

7
Practical tips
  • Learn to practice the presence of God daily.
    "Pray without ceasing".
  • Learn to let go of my agenda, of my concern.
  • The language of the gathered fellowship is not
    "I" but "we."
  • Have "holy expectancy Touch of living Jesus
  • Power to obey
  • Freedom from sin
  • Healing both inward and outward.
  • Enter the service ten minutes early.
  • Have Koinonia
  • Go, even if you don't feel like it.

8
The Fruit of Worship
  • Greater Obedience to our Commander-in-Chief,
    Jesus.
  • To worship is to change.
  • Worship involves a willingness to "Let the word
of Christ dwell in you richly, as you teach ! and
admonish one another in all wisdom, and as you
sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with
thankfulness in your hearts to God" (Col, 316)

Celebration
  • Definition
  • Why do we celebrate?
  • Why Jubilee?
  • How to practice celebration in our daily life

10
Definition
  • Google definition A celebration is a joyous
observation on the occasion of either something
joyful that is happening or has just happened.
  • Ex. Marriage, a new birth, a success in sport,
    business, and etc.

11
Spiritual Definition of Celebration
  • celebration is the best possible combination and
emotion, of the entire person, worshiping God
with our soul, mind, spirit, heart, inner being
    and body.
  • Celebration focuses on the person of God, His
goodness and greatness, and the delight and joy
that is to be found in seeking Him and finding
    Him.

12
Why do we celebrate?
  • The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has
anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He
has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind, to release
the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lords
    favor.
  • Luke 418,19

13
Why Jubilee?
  • Jubilee occurs 50 years
  • Sabbatical year occurs every 7 years
  • 7x749 The following year is the Jubilee

14
D. How to Practice the Spiritual Discipline of
Celebration
  • The Psalms are a great place to learn about
    celebration.
  • Many Psalms have a common, 2-part structure.
These 2 parts may be the stages of celebration.

15
The Stages of CelebrationThe 2-part Structure of
Many Psalms
  • 1st A crying out to God in distress
  • Expression of longing for God
  • Why, O LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you
hide yourself in times of trouble? (Ps 101)
  • As the deer pants for streams of water, so my
soul pants for you, O God. (Ps 421)
  • Description of the cause of distress
  • 2nd A call to celebrate God
  • For his deliverance (or in anticipation of
    deliverance)
  • Often includes feasting imagery
  • My soul will be satisfied as with the
richest of foods with singing lips my mouth will
    praise you. (Ps 635)

16
The Stages of CelebrationLessons
  • Times of distress are an opportunity to call out
    to God
  • We can celebrate Gods works, even in distress
  • Gods deliverance must be acknowledged and
    proclaimed

2. Biblical Styles of CelebrationLessons
  • 1. There are many ways to celebrate
  • 2. Be open to new ways, which may enrich your
experience of joy in the Lord
  • For example Latin American or African Styles
  • 3. Do not despise other ways. Remember Michal
  • When David returned home to bless his
household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to
meet him and said, How the king of Israel has
distinguished himself today, disrobing in the
sight of the slave girls of his servants as any
    vulgar fellow would!
  • David said to Michal, It was before the
LORD, who chose me rather than your father I
will celebrate before the LORD. I will become
even more undignified than this, and I will be
humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave
girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.
  • And Michal daughter of Saul had no children
to the day of her death.
