2
Definition of Evangelical Take your pick!!!
  • The National Association of Evangelicals (NAE)
publishes a Statement of Faith to which churches
must agree if they wish to join the Association.
It implies a definition of their concept of
    "Evangelical"
  • "We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the
only infallible, authoritative Word of God.
  • We believe that there is one God, eternally
existent in three persons Father, Son and Holy
    Spirit.

3
Evangelical Definition - continued
  • We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ,
in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His
miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death
through His shed blood, in His bodily
resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand
of the Father, and in His personal return in
    power and glory.
  • We believe that for the salvation of lost and
sinful people, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is
    absolutely essential.

4
Evangelical Definition - continued
  • We believe in the present ministry of the Holy
Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is
enabled to live a godly life.
  • We believe in the resurrection of both the saved
and the lost they that are saved unto the
resurrection of life and they that are lost unto
    the resurrection of damnation.
  • We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in
    our Lord Jesus Christ.

5
Definition of Fundamentalism
  • The Fundamentalism Project, directed and edited
by Martin E. Marty and Scott Appleby
  • religious idealism as basis for personal and
    communal identity
  • fundamentalists understand truth to be revealed
    and unified
  • it is intentionally scandalous, (outsiders cannot
    understand it)
  • fundamentalists envision themselves as part of a
    cosmic struggle

6
Definition of Fundamentalism 2
  • they seize on historical moments and reinterpret
them in light of this cosmic struggle
  • they demonize their opposition and are
    reactionary
  • fundamentalists are selective in what parts of
their tradition and heritage they stress
  • they are led by males
  • they envy modernist cultural hegemony and try to
    overturn the distribution of power.

7
Summary Ideas 1
  • Salvations is emphasized
  • Authority of the Word
  • Authority of Pastors and other religious leaders
to correctly interpret meaning and to provide
    guidance
  • Reliance on authority of the Word and those
religious leaders to provide structure and
    answers
  • Distrust in using their own logic all logic

8
Summary Ideas 2
  • Distrust of others claiming to be authoritative
  • All events are interpreted through their
worldview never challenge their world view
  • Others are blinded by the Devil and may be doing
    his bidding (especially professors)
  • Be submissive as Jesus was submissive
  • Faith in Jesus as God not actions that bring
    salvation

9
Other Important Terms
  • Millenialism 1000 years of peace when Christ
    rules
  • Tribulation a seven year interval when a world
political leader will gain control and is really
    the Antichrist
  • Armageddon a terrible war provoked by the
Antichrist and most people on the planet will die
and Gods wrath will be turned on the world.

10
Other Important Terms 2
  • The Rapture 1 Thessalonians 416-18 describes a
miraculous event when Christ will descend from
    the heavens. Conservative Protestants believe
that faithful "born again" Christians who have
previously died will be resurrected, rise from
their graves, and ascend to meet Jesus in the
    sky. Immediately afterwards, "born again"
Christians who had not died will also ascend into
the air. They will abandon cars, airplanes,
factory jobs, homes, families, friends etc. Since
the vast majority of humans are not "born again,"
most people will remain behind on earth. almost
exclusively believed only by fundamentalists and
    some evangelical not all Christians.

Other Important Terms 3
  • Dispensational Premillennialismthe Tribulation
is believed to precede the second coming of
Christ, and the subsequent establishment of the
    millennial kingdom -- a thousand-year golden age
on Earth. The Final Judgment follows the
    millennium and Many Premillennialists search
world events and signs in the heavens for some
indication of the Tribulation, which they
anticipate will arrive at any time.
