- Good Morning, The bear hunt
- is taking place right now.
- Hunters have killed many bears,
- according to the news article. You
- will write a persuasive letter to me.
- In the letter, you must either side with
- the protesters or defend the hunters
- right to control bear population. It is
- your decision to end the hunt or keep
- it going. You must back your opinion
- with supported facts and examples
- from the article and the people of New
- Jersey. You need a clearly stated
- opinion or goal. Do not forget to add a
- strong introduction and conclusion.

4Animal activists continue protests on final day
of New Jersey bear hunt
- The state of New Jersey launched
- into the national spotlight after a
- northern New Jersey bear hunt
- began nearly a week ago. Even
- before the hunt took place, animal
- rights activists and hunters
- wondered if the hunt should be
- allowed. Protesters at a bear
- checkpoint in Waywanda State Park
- continued to fight for their beliefs on
- Saturday, the last day of the bear
- hunt. The hunt was a way to control
- the growing bear population in NJ.
- State officials hoped the hunt would
- reduce bear population by at least
- 500.
-
- They said there were too many bears
- in North Jersey and they could
- threaten the lives of citizens.
- Protestors believe that the bears were
- unnecessarily killed, but several
- hunters defend the Governors
- decision of letting the hunt take
- place. As of Saturday afternoon, state
- officials counted 296 bears killed,
- about 200 short of the amount
- allowed. The mayor is faced with the
- choice, to continue the hunt or end
- the killing of bears.

- Nice to see youYea, those bears are in the way
Ill tell ya. - I use a lot of man power. We get calls all the
time. People need our help getting a bear off
their property. - Id like to see the hunt continue. People are
afraid of those bears. Its only a matter of time
before one attacks a citizen. - In my opinion, the problem is that people feed
them and they are getting brave.

- The governor, what a honor to meet you!
- These bears are all over the state. We are
licensed sport hunters. We can help lower the
bear population. - We are still 200 bears short of the goal of 500
killed. This will certainly help lower the risk
of a bear attacking a person or a pet. - Please let us finish our hunt. You wont be
sorry. The bear population will be under control
once again.

- Well, let us tell you, its very hard to feel
safe with all the bears around. - Mr. Fields Each week the bear gets into the
trash. Last week it took me 2 hours to clean up
the mess. - Mrs. Fields Im afraid one day that a bear will
get our dog, Mr. Peppers. - Jr. Last week, when I was swimming a bear walked
into our yard. I was really scared. I didnt know
what to do. - We say the sooner the bears are gone the better.
They are always causing problems in this
neighborhood.
9Fire Chief Smitty
Fire Department
- Fire Chief Nice too see you again. The bears
you say. Well, I think they are a real problem. - The problem is that they get protective over
their cubs. Last week I had send out my men to
get cubs out of a tree in a citizens backyard. - Oh yea, and just yesterday we responded to a
rescue call. A man hit a bear in a car on the
main road out there. It did a lot of damage to
the car. - The problem is there is just too many of them
out there. They are a danger to the citizens and
our department.

10NJ State Park Ranger Service
- Hello, the bears yea, I keep seeing less and
less of them Id say. - I think its a shame they keep hunting them.
They really are something special. Ha, they were
here first. - The problem is people come to these parks and
feed them. After so many people feed them, they
think every person has some food to eat. They
become tame and no longer fear humans. - We need to educate the public. People need to be
aware of the dangers of feeding and playing with
the animal. - Its not the bears fault that some people play
games and feed them.

- Wow the governor, thank you for coming.
- The bears should not be killed. It is not fair.
We are one their land. They have every right to
be here as we do. - People need to be more respectful to bears.
- We need to educate people on bear safety tips.

12Mr. Smith (Local Hiker)
- Ive been hiking these woods for 15 years now.
Ive seen my share of bears, snakes, deer, and
even wild turkey. - All the wild animals are the same. If you leave
them alone they wont bother you. - The problem is the people who taunt or feed the
bears. - If you ask me, those people should be punished
not the bears.

13Protestors
- Nice to see our voice has reached you governor.
- We are very upset and concerned. The bear hunt
is destroying natures beauty. - The people are responsible for feeding and
teasing of bears. Now they are afraid a bear
might attack. - The people must be educated on bear safety. Its
not the bears fault if a person is
irresponsible.
