Title: Details about Denmark

1
About Denmark
  • Details about Denmark

2
Dannebrog (The name of our flag)
  • The legend of the flag is very popular among
Danes, although most consider it to be a myth,
albeit a beautiful one. The legend says that
during the Battle of Lyndanisse, also known as
the Battle of Valdemar (Danish "Volmerslaget"),
near Lyndanisse (Tallinn) in Estonia, on June 15
1219, the flag fell from the sky during a
critical stage, resulting in Danish victory.
  • Today the danish people are very fond of their
flag and they always use it for their birthdays
and when they are celebrating something.
  • Also the danes almost always give some kind of
party when they have birthday and then people
give presents. The flag is always used on busses
and public buildings when our Queen, Princes and
    Princesses have birthday.
  • In Denmark we also have a tradition for using the
flag at school when there are examinations and
other festivities as for example the woorkers
international liberation day the 1. of may where
loads of people gather in parks and listen to
    political speeches.
  • The flag is also used every year the 5th of June
to celebrate the day where Denmark had its first
real law the 5 th of June 1849 which was the
beginning of the Danish democracy. Here the king
Frederik the 7th gave his power to the people by
saying The peoples love is my strength.

Christiania
  • Christiania was founded in 1971, when many people
    from different
  • backgrounds began to take over an area of
recently abandoned military barracks together. At
the time many people in the larger Danish cities
  • felt betrayed by the politicians, as there was a
    serious lack of housing.
  • The inhabitants of the surrounding neighborhood
    Christianshavn also
  • wanted a green, open area for their children to
    use, away from the
  • increasing traffic in Copenhagen. The spirit of
    Christiania quickly
  • developed into one of communism, the hippie
    movement and the
  • squatter movement. It has just been decided
politically that Christiania shall no longer
exist as it is now. Many people think it is very
sad also because it has become a special sight in
    Copenhagen, which attracts many tourists.

Absalon
  • Absalon (c. 1128March 21, 1201) was a Danish
    archbishop and statesman.
  • Absalon was the founder of Copenhagen in 1167. He
was given the habour of Copenhagen as a gift from
    the King.

Amalienborg Palace
  • Amalienborg Palace (Danish Amalienborg Slot) is
the winter home of the Danish royal family, and
it is located in Copenhagen, Denmark. It consists
of four identical classicizing palace façades
with rococo interiors around an octagonal square
(Amalienborg Slotsplads) in the center of the
square is a monumental equestrian statue of
    Amalienborg's founder, King Frederik V.
  • Amalienborg was originally built for four noble
    families however, when Christiansborg Castle
burnt down on February 26, 1794, the royal family
bought the palaces and moved in. Over the years
various kings and their families have resided in
    the four different palaces.

Christiansborg Palace
  • Christiansborg Palace on Slotsholmen in central
Copenhagen is the home of Denmark's two supreme
powers the executive power and the legislative
power called Regeringen the government and
Folketinget'. Christiansborg Palace is owned by
the Danish state, and is run by the Palaces and
    Properties Agency.
  • The palace today bears witness to three eras of
Danish architecture, as the result of two serious
fires. The first fire occurred in 1794 and the
second in 1884. The main part of the current
palace, built in 1928, is in the historicist
Neo-baroque style. The chapel dates to the 1800s
and is in a neoclassical style. The showgrounds
date were built in the eighteenth century in a
    baroque style.
  • In the basement of Christiansborg you can still
see the very first castle which is dated back to
the time of Absalon in the 1200 century.
