Grade Level Expectations
. . . explain what students should knowand be
able to do.
  • Each GLE contains
  • A statement of cognitive demand and the essential
content or process to be learned
  • Evidence of Learning is a bulleted list of
    student demonstrations that provides educators
with common illustrations of the learning

7
GLE Numbering System
  • The GLE numbering system identifies
  • EALR
  • Component
  • GLE

14
Curriculum and Course Alignment
  • Policy and Implementation Roles
  • OSPI Establish state content standards for
content areas. Provide technical assistance to
districts to access and implement standards.
  • State Board of Education (SBE) Establish
graduation requirements in content areas and
    credits.
  • Districts Develop and ensure courses are
offered and are aligned to state standards for
    graduation requirements.

15
WAC 180-51-061 Graduation Requirements
  • Class of 2008 and beyond
  • High School Credits must be aligned
  • (at a minimum) to the
  • EALRs at 9/10th grade GLEs in Reading, Writing,
    Communication, Mathematics, and Science
  • EALRs at Benchmark 3 in Social Studies, The Arts,
    and Health and Fitness
  • Info www.sbe.wa.gov/gradreq

16
What is Curriculum Alignment?
  • Planned connection of the established curriculum
    based on the standards with
  • What is taught (including instructional
    materials) and
  • What is tested
  • Big idea Curriculum alignment ensures that
what is taught matches what is tested and aligns
    with the EALRs/GLEs
  • Big idea All efforts to strengthen the
    correlation between standards and instruction
will lead to greater student success.

17
Types of Alignment
  • Topical (basic) Alignmentrefers to
  • An initial level of alignment where there is
congruence between the content (topics) in the
local curriculum documents (which are based on
the GLEs), classroom instruction, and the
    assessment of the learning.
  • Deep Alignmentrefers to
  • The congruence of the content, context, and
cognitive demand between the local curriculum
documents (which are based on the GLEs),
classroom instruction, and the assessment of the
    learning.

18
Three Cs of Alignment
  • Contentrefers to the
  • Topic of the learning, i.e., the concepts,
    skills, strategies, and procedures.
  • Contextrefers to the
  • Ways in which the content may be learned,
including the learning environment, the givens
    (instructional resources, materials, and
    specialized vocabulary).
  • Cognitive Demandrefers to the
  • Type of cognition required of the student defined
in Blooms Taxonomy of the Cognitive Domain.
Important to note is that the use of the
taxonomy reflects a classification of six types
of cognition rather than a hierarchy.

Goal 2 Common Project Areas
  • Curriculum Based Assessments (CBAs)
  • Grade Level Expectations Development
  • HB 2195 Requires in 2008-09 school districts
have assessments or other strategies to assure
students are learning EALRS in Social Studies,
Health and Fitness and the Arts.
  • Reporting Form needed for 2008-09
  • Implementing Objective Assessments for Social
Studies, the Arts, and Health/Fitness document

31
Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs) for Goal 2
  • Positive Momentum
  • Thousands of teachers at CBA presentations
  • Hundreds of teachers implementing CBAs w/
    increasing enthusiasm
  • Most districts utilizing OSPIs recommendations
    for the CBAs
  • Non-profits developing instructional materials
    aligned to the CBAs
  • Issues
  • Minimal Funding from Legislature
  • (72,000 for 2007-09 for Civics CBAs)
  • Need to refine and re-pilot items
  • Ambiguity in the law (assessments or other
    strategies)

K-12 Instructional Materials Review for
Mathematics and Reading
  • How to Use this Review
  • Recognize there are no Silver Bullets--no one
program has 100 alignment to GLEs
  • As a first screen of information when aligning
    currently adopted core, supplemental or
intervention programs or considering new products
  • Know that most publishers now have more detail
about their alignment to GLEs, not just topical
    EALR alignment materials
  • DO NOT use the Review as
  • A single source from which to choose new
    materials

Master Price Agreements for Washington State
  • OSPI has entered into Master Price Agreements
(MPA) with publishers for programs reviewed and
found to be in strong alignment with state
    standards for Grades K-10 Reading
    Core/Comprehensive Materials.

41
Master Price Agreements for Washington State
  • Benefits
  • MPAs require that publishers hold current catalog
prices for a period of six (6) years.
  • If a price lower than current catalog pricing is
offered anywhere in the US, the reduced price
becomes the price offered to Washington
    districts.
  • Districts are not limited to purchasing the
    programs included in the MPAs.
