Grantmaking Overview
Competitive Grants
Donor advised Grants
  • Competitive grants are awarded to organizations
    that seek to meet an identified community need
    and that match the goals, objectives and
    priorities of the foundation. Competitive grants
    are awarded through a Letter of Intent and
    application process.
  • Donor advised grants are awarded by individual
    donors/funds with specific preferences for their
    grantmaking. Donor advised funds are not open to
    funding requests.

  • Increase the participation of diverse, ethnic,
    and low-income individuals and communities in the
    arts.
  • Human Development
  • Increase opportunities that promote independent
    living and community participation for vulnerable
    individuals.
  • Education
  • Increase PreK-5 student achievement in literacy
    and math among low-income and underserved
    children.
  • Health Care
  • Increase access to care for low income and
    underserved populations through community clinic
    capacity building, policy and advocacy efforts
    and childrens health insurance enrollment.
  • Neighborhood Revitalization
  • Increase the supply of and access to affordable
    housing in Los Angeles County and ensure resident
    engagement in neighborhood land use and planning
    processes.

Types of Support
  • Four types of competitive grants
  • Core operating Unrestricted funding supports
    the overall work of the organization
  • Capacity building Helps organizations plan for
    long-term growth limited to specific activities
    such as planning, training and technical
    assistance, board and staff development, etc.
  • Policy analysis and advocacy Supports
    nonpartisan studies, public awareness campaigns
  • Capital projects One-time funding for purchase,
    renovation or new construction of facilities
  • Average grant awards are between 50,000 to
    100,000 over a two-year period.

Another Type ofCCF Support

    interest loans at below-market rates and loan
    guarantees) that enhance its competitive
    grantmaking activities.

Soliciting A Grant
  • Step 1 Submit Letter of Intent
  • Program Officer review/evaluation (6 8 weeks)
  • Step 2 Submit Proposal (following invitation)
  • Program Officer review/evaluation (4 5 months)
  • Recommendations reviewed by the Board in March,
    June and October.
  • Refer to the timeline on page 11 in the Grant
    Guidelines for schedule of grant
    application/review cycles.

    capital project, or policy/advocacy support,
    include a copy of your project budget, schedule,
    a one paragraph description of your project,
    specific outcomes and measurable objectives.
