destination, attracting tourists from around the
    globe

  • The hospitality and tourism industry was
responsible for about 18 percent of the emirates
    gross domestic product (GDP)
  • In the next four years Dubai hotels will have
    12,000 additional rooms, with several
international hotel chains making their debut in
    the emirate

million visitors by 2010 their presence will
create substantial demand for healthcare and new
    medical facilities.
  • At present, 106 airlines operate at Dubai
    International Airport, providing connections to
    145 destinations
  • A world-class hospitality infrastructure, already
in place in Dubai, can lend support for smooth
    development of medical tourism
  • Medical Tourism industry is one of the fastest
growing multi billion dollar market worldwide. In
the Arab World many untapped opportunities exists
    for medical tourism
  • Globalization and economic liberalization are
giving further support for medical tourism

4
Medical Tourism - Product
  • Medical tourism can be broadly defined as
provision of cost effective private medical
care in collaboration with the tourism industry
for patients needing surgical and other forms of
    specialized treatment
  • Medical tourism is like any leisure product where
service components like airlines, hotels, travel
    companies, transportation, food outlets are
offered and medical treatment at the best
    hospitals
  • The medical treatment for various ailments are
packaged with recuperative leisure packages at
    world class tourist resorts

Countries Promoting Medical Tourism
  • Medical tourism is being actively promoted in
Greece, South Africa, Jordan, India, Malaysia,
    Philippines, Thailand and Singapore
  • Countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand,
where health care services are being promoted
    overseas alongside tourist destination, have
attracted more than 600,000 patients in 2003
  • Thailand alone generated some US280 million in
revenues from treating 308,000 foreign patients
  • In 2002, 109,000 Arab patients traveled to Jordan
for medical treatments, with each spending on an
average US5,500, leading to an estimated total
    US600 million
  • Healthcare hospitality projects in the Arab world
have the advantage of lower costs compared to
those in the US and Europe, which when coupled
with high quality service, can attract a large
share of patients from the region who seek
    treatment abroad

6
Medical Tourism Market
  • Madar Research forecasts the Medical Tourism
market in Dubai to be close to one billion
    dollars by 2012
  • With world class healthcare infrastructure like
Dubai Health Care City in place this figure could
    be easily achievable

7

Dubai- Healthcare at a Glance
  • Health care services in Dubai started in 1943
with a health center in Al Ras and in 1951 saw
the opening of Al Maktoum Hospital
  • Mid nineties saw the opening of major private
sector hospitals like the American, Welcare and
    Belhoul hospitals
  • Though the private sector contribution to the
medical care started a decade ago, the public
sector is still the major health care provider in
    Dubai

9
Breakdown Public Private Sector
10
Dubai New Hospital Projects

company Accor, is building the first wellness and
hydrotherapy centre on Palm Jumeirah island

11
E-Health
  • E-Health is "the leveraging of the information
    and communication technology (ICT)
  • To connect provider and patients and governments
  • To educate and inform health care professionals,
    managers and consumers
  • To stimulate innovation in care delivery and
    health system management and,
  • To improve the health care system"

12
Telemedicine
  • The use of information technology to deliver
medical services and information from one
location to another as defined by World Health
    Organization
  • Emirates Hospital was the first to provide
telemedicine services in Dubai, but other
hospitals are expected to provide similar
    facilities in the near future
  • MOH, which introduced telemedicine in Al Mafraq
Hospital (Abu Dhabi) in association with Mayo
Clinic Minnesota, has plans to introduce similar
services at Al Baraha Hospital in Dubai

13
Telemedicine - Market
  • MedMarket Diligence estimates that in 2003 there
were 169 million telemedicine care visits, or
    telemedicine information exchanges between a
practitioner and patient, resulting in payments
    of 6.28 billion.
  • Estimate of the worldwide market for
telemedicine, as published by the Canadian
government through Industry Canada, for the year
2000 stood at 1.125 trillion. This prediction
was based on a much broader set of market
segments than is traditionally analyzed, and yet
still seems to be an amazingly large number for
telemedicine. Beyond clinical care services, this
    report included peacekeeping and battlefield
    applications, professional backup, consumer
    health information, continuing professional
education, and management of healthcare delivery.
  • Cap Gemini Ernst Young predicts that the global
telemedicine market will grow sharply from
USD2.04 billion in 2000 to USD7.29 billion in
    2004.

14
Conclusion
  • If development goes according to government
plans, Madar Research expects Medical Tourism to
flourish in Dubai during the next 8 years, to
become nearly US1 billion industry in 2012
  • Telemedicine, as a product and a service, is
expected to take off in Dubai in coming few
years, to be worth tens of millions of dollars in
    2012
