Its hard to believe but

Background Association of Rivers Trusts
  • Launched in 2001, the Association of Rivers
    Trusts (ART) is the representative body of the
    Rivers Trust movement in England and Wales and
    also provides an umbrella for many community
    based river improvement groups, initiatives and
    projects. ART has an MOU with its sister body in
    Scotland, River and Fisheries Trusts Scotland
    (RAFTS).

The Rivers Trusts Movement are
  • A grassroots bottom up movement
  • Involving people who are doers with wet feet
  • Recognised as river basin deliverers
  • Raising awareness and providing education
  • Engaging people who own and manage the resource
    e.g. riparian owners, farmers, anglers
  • Empowering communities to take action
  • Allowing people to take local ownership
  • Identifying new funding sources and helping
    ensure existing funds are spent effectively

  • EU Water Framework Directive (WFD)

The major aims of the WFD are
  • To prevent further deterioration and protect
    enhance the status of aquatic ecosystems and
    associated wetlands
  • To promote the sustainable consumption of water
    to reduce pollution of waters from priority
    substances
  • To prevent the deterioration in the status and to
    progressively reduce pollution of groundwaters
    and
  • To contribute to mitigating the effects of floods
    and droughts.
  • The overall requirement of the Directive is to
    achieve "good ecological and good chemical
    status" by 2015 unless there are grounds for
    derogation.

WFD River Basin Plans (Article 13)
  • River basin management plans1. Member States
    shall ensure that a river basin management plan
    is produced for each river basin district lying
    entirely within their territory.

    implementation of this Directive, in particular
