Foreword
  • Situational Analysis
  • Atlas Van Lines conducts corporate relocation
issues research on an annual basis. This is the
third year the study has been conducted via
    telephone.
  • For the 35th Annual Corporate Relocation Survey,
Atlas Van Lines contracted NextResearch, an
independent research company, to conduct the
survey and analyze the data. This was done to
    ensure confidentiality and objectivity. Research
design assistance was provided by Keller Crescent
Co., a total marketing communications company
    with headquarters in Evansville, Indiana.
  • Methodology
  • For the year 2002, 302 phone interviews were
conducted from January 22 through February 28.

3
Management Summary
  • Corporate Profile
  • Manufacturing/Processing is the most highly
    represented business classification in this
study. The following is a breakdown of
    respondents company business classifications
  • Almost half of these companies are international
(49). Large companies are more likely to be
    international nearly 3 in 4 (72) companies
with more than 5000 employees are international
while only 4 in 10 (40) companies with fewer
    than 500 employees are international.
  • The average annual sales for all companies
involved in this study is 76.5 million.
  • Half (50) of the companies involved in this
study employ less than 500 salaried workers
    one-third (33) employ 500-4999 salaried
employees and just under one-fifth (17) have
    5000 or more salaried employees.

4
Management Summary
  • Corporate Profile contd
  • Almost three-quarters (73) of the companies
surveyed have a formal relocation policy. Due to
larger budgets and more annual relocations,
companies with 5000 or more employees are more
likely to have a formal relocation policy than
are smaller companies (94 large companies vs.
    76 mid-sized and 63 small companies).
  • The same is true for centralized relocation
departments, more than 8 in 10 (84) of the large
companies surveyed have a centralized relocation
department vs. 73 of the mid-sized and 69 of
the small companies. Most of these centralized
relocation departments are responsible for the
    following
  • - Controlling Household Goods Carrier Selection
    (75)
  • - Controlling Freight Carrier Selection (67).
  • For nearly half (49) of the companies surveyed,
the company is the sole selector of the household
goods carrier for the employees move.
  • For 2 in 10 (20), the company and the employee
select the household goods carrier together. The
employee selects the carrier 19 of the time and
a relocation firm selects the household goods
carrier only 12 of the time.

5
Management Summary
  • Respondent Profile
  • Most respondents (79) work in Human Resources
and/or Personnel. There were a variety of
different positions held among those who
completed this survey from managers (27),
    relocation administrators (15), and directors
    (13) to a myriad of other positions, including a
few vice presidents, assistants, and others.
  • A little over half (54) of the respondents read
    trade publications. The most popular
    publications are
  • - HR Magazine (39)
  • - Mobility (25)
  • Human Resource Executive (17)
  • HR News (15).
  • While 71 of the total of employees interviewed
do not belong to any relocation-related
associations, membership is higher at large
    companies.

6

  • Corporate Profile
  • Larger companies were more likely to have an
increased relocation budget (35) in 2001
    compared to 2000.
  • Approximately half (48) of the companies
    surveyed, regardless of size, allocated
approximately the same amount of money for
relocations in 2001 as they did in the previous
    year.
  • - 26 increased from 2000 budget
  • - 48 stayed the same as 2000 budget
  • - 26 decreased from 2000 relocation budget.

the U.S., compared to only 10 employees
moved to the U.S. from other countries and 2
    moved within Canada.
  • The following is the makeup of those employees
    transferred in 2001.
  • 80 of those relocated in 2001 were men and 20
of the employees relocated were women.
  • Of the men, 51 of them had accompanying wives,

    equally

accept or decline an offer 36 of the companies
surveyed allow up to two weeks to accept or
decline an offer and (37) allow one month or
more to decide. Larger companies (those with
5000 or more salaried employees) usually allow
the employee more time to accept a relocation
    offer.
  • The majority of companies allow the hiring of
spouses of current employees (84). Smaller
