In the UK over 34,000 people a year are diagnosed
with colorectal cancer, the second commonest
cancer in females and the third in males¹.
Approximately one third of colonic cancer
patients and one tenth of rectal cancer patients
are admitted as emergencies. 20 of patients who
undergo emergency surgery die within one month of
surgery². It is well recognised that colorectal
stents can provide cost effective palliation for
advanced colorectal cancers, improving the
patients quality of life. What maybe less
recognised is the beneficial role these stents
can play in providing temporary relief for acute
obstructions allowing for elective surgery to be
performed. This evening meeting brings together
local experts from different specialities to
present their experiences on colorectal cancer,
treatment modalities and the role of colorectal
stents both in palliative and acute cases. In
addition, in the current climate of evidence
based practice, there is a session on the cost
effectiveness of colorectal stenting for acute
cases. This is a by invitation only meeting and
your prompt response would be appreciated. We
hope you can attend what looks to be an exciting
meeting with the opportunity for open discussion
and look forward to seeing you in Manchester. 1.
