  • Utilizing Innovative Technology to Support a
  • New Way for Nursing Students to Learn"

2
Objectives
  • To discuss the NRC - the staff and the
    environment.
  • To discuss the trends that have supported the
    need for simulation.
  • To discuss the benefits for nursing.
  • To discuss simulation technology in the NRC.
  • To discuss how we use simulation to support our
    students.

3
NRC Staff and the Environment
  • Manager Kim Shadlock
  • Practicum Coordinator - Skills
  • Tracey Fletcher Daniela Naccarato
  • Practicum Secretary Stephanie Vince
  • The Nursing Resource Centre (NRC) is 5000 sq.
    feet of fun and learning.
  • This space includes Main Skills Lab, Computer
    Simulation Lab, Audio Visual Lab

4
Main Skills Lab
  • A simulated hospital environment that has been
created to support 900 nursing students with
    their clinical skill development.
  • 20 adult medical surgical beds, a pediatric
unit, inclusive of bassinets, cribs and
    isolettes.
  • Includes an isolation room, a trauma room and a
fully equipped hand washing / bathing room.
  • 4 Sim Man mannequins, 18 adult mannequins with
heart/lung sound capability, 1 Sim Baby
mannequin, 2 pediatric mannequins, a variety of
neonate mannequins and a collection of anatomical
    training models.

5
Trends
  • Cost containment changes in the traditional
healthcare system, which have resulted in fewer
learning experiences with less supervision and
    mentoring.
  • Increased patient acuity and technical
    interventions, requiring better prepared novice
    learners.
  • Shifts in nursing education venues from hospital
    based programs to university settings.
  • The availability of patient simulation
technologies with increasing levels of realism.
  • Feingold, C.E., Calaluce, M. Kallen, M.A.
(2004, April). Computerized patient model and
    simulated clinical experiences Evaluation with
    baccalaureate nursing students. Journal of
    Nursing Education, 43, 158-163.

6
Benefits
  • Learning in a risk free environment.
  • Absence of patient risk.
  • Promotes critical thinking skills.
  • Interactive learning.
  • Repeated practice of skills.
  • Immediate feedback.

7
Sim Man / Sim Baby
  • Full scale patient simulator, allows students to
perform nursing skills and scenarios with
    immediate response to interventions
  • Challenges students critical decision-making
skills in realistic patient care scenarios
  • Simulated lung sounds, heart sounds, bowel
sounds, vocal sounds and cardiac monitoring, 12
    lead ECG and X-ray interpretation
  • Generates automatic debriefing based on the event
log synchronized with video, which provides
immediate, detailed feedback on performance to
    students
  • PDA allows for remote access, and interaction

8
Nasco / Virtual IV
  • Nasco Life Form Keri Auscultation Manikin
  • Supports the practice of patient care, assessment
    and nursing skills
  • Provides the ability to auscultate heart and lung
    sounds
  • Virtual IV
  • A self directed interactive IV initiation
simulator suited to a wide range of competency
    levels
  • Provides case scenarios with automatic debriefing
    and remediation

9
Simulation in Action
  • Connection to Nursing Courses
  • Students work through clinical simulation
scenarios that support the integration of the
clinical and theoretical components of their
    nursing program.
  • The focus is on critical thinking, synthesis of
    knowledge, clinical decision-making,
    problem-solving, and application to
    context-dependent situations.
  • Opportunity to evaluate, review, and further
    develop clinical skills.

10
Simulation in Action
  • Practice
  • A collaborative learning environment where
students can further develop and advance their
    professional development and clinical skills.
  • Remedial Practice
  • Support provided to meet individual student needs
    in competency areas requiring development.
  • Overall Student Support
  • Fall 2005 - Total 866 students (458 formalized
    class, 400 practice, 8 remedial)
  • Winter 2006 - Total 315 students (96 formalized
    class, 207 practice,12 remedial)

11
Future Plans
  • Teleconferencing.
  • Video taping and video streaming.
  • Supporting the development of advanced clinical
    skills ie. trauma room.
