Requirements
  • Highlights for Program Compliance
  • Children ages 1-2 years old MUST have teeth
    brushed with small smear of toothpaste that
    contains fluoride.
  • Children ages 2 and above are to be
    supervised/assisted with using small smear of
    fluoride toothpaste.

  • The changes effecting children 1-2 years of age
    will require consent for fluoride to be answered
    on the Consent Form.

    Procedure
  • Use as a guide in making revisions for your
    programs procedure.
  • Review with your agencys Health Services
    Advisory Committee.

First Smiles Migrant Oral Health Education
  • California Head Start Association Provided an
    training March 20th to Train Migrant Staff on
    implementing First Smiles Dental Education
    Curriculum.
  • Trainers have been asked to do trainings for
    Migrant Teachers/Home Visitors/Family Service
    Workers.
  • More Information to come as training dates are
    set-up.

Dental Exams Treatment Totals for PIR
  • Accuracy of totals reported in C17 versus C19.
    There has been some inconsistency with what is
    required for Migrant Head Start Programs.
  • C.17 Number of Children who have completed a
    Professional Dental Examination during the
    current operating period or within the last 12
    months. Migrant Programs should report on
    children age 3 and older only when completing
    this item.

  • C.19 Number of children who received a
    professional oral examination within the last 12
    months. Migrant Programs should report Exams for
    children 0-3 years of age.
  • More clarification to follow. Continue to
    collect/track Dental Exams/Treatment numbers and
    enter information in COPA Medical Record Dental
    Report or your agencies PIR Tracking system.

Increasing Dental Exam Completions Treatment
Needs
  • Goal is 100 of all children enrolled to have
    Dental Exams completed.
  • For children needing Dental Treatment Goal is
    100, receive care/complete treatment.

Plans to Reach 100
  • Implement First Smile Oral Health Education for
    parents, and children.
  • When you teach children new
  • habits at school and encourage them
  • to share with parents and siblings it becomes
  • a great education tool.
  • Dental Exam/Treatment Incentive Kits. Distribute
    to families that provide compliance of Dental
    Exam/Treatment Needs.

  • Update Dental Providers list for your areas.
    Contact Public Health Agencies for current list
    of Dentists excepting the insurances children in
    your program receive.
  • Contact your local Dental Society for
    authorization to distribute the letter What
    Every Dentist Should Know About Head Start, to
    local Dentists.
  • Participate or help coordinate Dental Fairs.
    Samples of how to set-up a Dental Education Fair
    for Parents are in the First Smile Oral Health
    Binders that were distributed 2006.
