What procedures followed at Ellis Island?

• Before Ellis Island existed the receiving center
  for immigrants was Castle Garden, which was
  located on the tip of Manhattan.

Clerks had to know the immigrants name, where
the immigrant came from, and where he or she is
going to go in America.

• Then physicians had to give the immigrants
  checkups to see if the immigrants were healthy
  and if they could move their arms and legs
  freely.

• Once reaching Ellis Island, immigrants had to be
  checked for diseases and physical fitness.

  about their family members if they were
  immigrating too. A birth certificate was one
  specific paper that immigrants needed to have.

• Then they had to be mentally fit. Mentally fit
  means that the immigrants had to fit in the with
  the U.S. For example, what the U.S celebrates.
  Finally, the immigrants had to be prepared to
  live in the U.S. because the immigrants have
  different cultures and stuff in their homeland so
  they had to get used to the cultures in the U.S.

• In 1892, the first immigrant to arrive to the
  main building in Ellis Island was Annie Moore.
• In 1909, if immigrants were allowed to enter
  America, they would have to have at least 20.00.
• By 1917, every immigrants were required for
  complete medical exams.
• By 1921, the immigrants had to pass a literacy
  test and show their passport and visa.
