Instructions for Setting Up the Operating Room

Objectives

• To ensure that the necessary drugs are adequately
  available
• To ensure that equipment is functioning and ready
  for use at any time
• To provide a clean environment for procedures and
  to reduce risk of postoperative infections
• To prevent cross contamination

Drugs

• Request drugs, IV fluids, cleaning lotions and
  maintain records
• Check expiration dates and use the ones with
  short expiration dates (weekly) first
• Store drugs at appropriate temperature
  (refrigerate when necessary)
• Ensure drug trolley is easily accessible

Equipment and Supplies

• Maintain checklist of all functioning equipment
• Check whether the following are working properly
• Suction apparatus
• Boyles machine and breathing circuit
• Oxygen cylinders or any other oxygen source
• Laryngoscope and other instruments

Equipment and Supplies (contd)

• Ensure that the following are available
• Lumbar puncture sets with syringes
• Resuscitation trolley with drugs and equipment
• Patient monitoring equipment (pulse oxymeter,
  blood pressure instrument and electrocardiogram
  machine, where available)
• Defibrillator (if available)

Maintenance

• Clean operating room with bleaching solution
  (chlorine)
• Thoroughly wash and disinfect equipment
• Perform special disinfection following septic
  cases
• Wash and sterilize linen and equipment

Protective Barriers

• Adequate number of clean operating room
  dresses/gowns, caps and face masks
• Operating room boots/shoes, shoe covers (if
  available)
• Gloves Utility and surgical gloves
• Plastic sheets
