    components

All 5 components are essential to an
efficient system.
3
PHARMACY
  • DEVELOPING A COMPUTERISED INFORMATION SYSTEM
  •
  • The aim in developing a CIS should be to produce
    the CIS ...
  • on time
  • within budget
  • so that it satisfies the user's needs.
  • Problems
  •
  • eg. Air traffic control system
  • Space shuttle
  • Police Department criminal records.
  • Pharmacy IS
  •

PHARMACY
  • PHARMACY INFORMATION SYSTEM
  • Pharmacy Information Systems (PIS)
  • PIS Performs numerous clinical checks including
  • allergy checking
  • prior reactions
  • drug-to-drug interaction
  • drug-to-food interaction
  • drug-to-laboratory interaction
  • Also checking for dosage errors
  • Allow pharmacists to create user defined alerts
    and warnings.

5
PHARMACY
Some of the activities which PIS have been
employed in pharmacy departments include
Clinical Screening
  • Prescription Management
  • When prescription orders are received, the orders
are matched to available pharmaceutical products
and then dispensed accordingly depending on
whether the patient is an inpatient or
    outpatient.

6
PHARMACY
Inventory Management This is made even more
difficult when there are multiple dispensing
points. When done manually it is very difficult
to maintain an accurate inventory. Patient Drug
Profiles These profiles are used for used
for clinical screening anytime a prescription is
ordered for the patient.
7
PHARMACY
  • Report Generation
  • Generate reports which range from
  • determining medication usage patterns in the
    hospital
  • the cost of drugs purchased and /or dispensed.
  • Interactivity with other systems
  • It is important that PIS should be able to
interact with other available systems such as the
    clinical information systems to receive
    prescription orders and financial information
    system for billing and charging.

8
PHARMACY
  • Integration
  • What is integration
  • How it is supposed to work

at 2 p.m., that administration is documented in
her chart and available immediately for review
    across the enterprise.
