1877-Thomas Edison is granted a patent for the
foil cylinder phonograph. This is the first
machine to record sounds and replay them

1890- gramophones become household items and used
one-sided discs instead of cylinders
1894- Guglielmo Marconi invents the spark
transmitter with antenna (radio) in Italy

1904- The album, a two-sided disc is invented
by the International Talking Machine Co. in
Germany
1906- Victor Talking Machine Co. creates an
internal horn phonograph, the Victrola, that
plays albums

1926- Vitaphone Co. and ATT sign a contract to
develop sound pictures for movies. The standard
album speed of 33 1/3 is established
1927- The first electronic juke box is invented
to replace coin-operated pianos

1928- Dr. Fritz Pfleumer patents the application
of applying magnetic powders to strips of paper
or film in Germany
1934- S. Joseph Begun built the first magnetic
tape recorder for broadcasting, in Germany

1949- RCA Victor introduces the 7 inch (17.78 cm)
45 rpm to the American public

in Switzerland
1963- Phillips Recording System introduced the
first compact audio cassette to the US

1966- US cars are equipped with 8-track stereo
cartridge players that were developed by William
Lear (founder of Learjets)
1979- Sony introduces the Walkman, a portable
audio cassette player with headphones

1982- The first digital audio compact disc (CD)
is sold. The disc is 5 inches (12.7 cm) in
diameter
1987- MP3 (MPEG) technology was developed in
Germany
1988- CD sales surpass album and cassette sales
and portable CD players (Discman) become
