Reasearch Method
  • We used secondary analysis as our research method
because it would be pretty hard for us to go out
and survey people on our topic. We got
information from journals, books, ebsco host, web
sites, and general information from people that
    know stuff about nutrition.

4
What you will learn
  • The effects of nutrition, parenting, society, and
    genes on a child's weight
  • What is being done about overweight, and obese
    children
  • What you can do to help children who are
    overweight or obese

5
Facts
  • One in Four children are overweight
  • 70 of children that are obese at a young age are
still obese when they are adults
  • Second only to smoking, kills 350,000 preventable
    deaths each year
  • Some of the health problems that can occur are
    cardiovascular disease, diabetes, colon, breast,
    or prostate cancer
  • Many doctors do not like telling parents that
their children are overweight and consequently
when they finally do tell the parent, an eating
    disorder is suspected
  • Eating disorders are far less common than weight
    gain problems
  • Pediatric obesity has also triggered sleep apnea,
    hypertension, and type 2 diabetes

6
Facts contd
  • Among the children who were severely obese only
3 of their parents thought their child was
    overweight
  • 25 of childrens food intake is done while
    watching television
  • Child obesity has doubled and even tripled
between the years of 1980-1994 while the amount
of television watched by kids has also increased
    dramatically
  • 1969 the average child in America watched two
    hours
  • 1990 the average child watched a remarkable five
    plus hours of television

8
A few things parents can do
  • Boob Tube- Have the child watch one less hour a
day of TV and instead get some physical activity.
  • Portion Size- Have a reasonable amount of food
for that child when it is time to eat. Stay away
    from supersizing at restaurants.
  • Beverage Savvy- Have children drink less water.
Take all the soda out of the house and dilute
    juice with water.

9
A few things parents can do
  • Food Prep 101- When eating at a fast food place,
inform children of healthier choices like having
a grilled sandwich instead of fried food. Also
by leaving certain condiments off of certain
types of foods to make it a healthier choice.
  • Five to Stay Alive- Presenting the food in a
creative way also helps children eat right. Cut
fruits into shapes or by spreading them out on a
    plate.
  • Like Mother, Like Daughter- If a parent is
overweight, they should let their children know.
They can both go through eating better and
getting exercise together. This will help the
child know that they arent the only one
    overweight.

10
Important Terms
  • BMI- (Body Mass Index) the ratio of weight to
    height
  • Overweight-Weighing more than is normal,
necessary, or allowed, especially having more
body weight than is considered normal or healthy
    for one's age or build.
  • Obese-Extremely fat, or grossly overweight.

11
BMI-Body Mass Index
  • Take your weight and multiply it times 703.
  • Divide the result by your height (in inches)
    squared.
  • For example, if you are 56 and weigh 140 pounds
  • 140 x 703 98,420
  • (Height squared) 66 x 66 4,356
  • 98,420/4,356 22.6
  • A BMI of 25 to 29 means youre overweight, 30 or
above means you are obese, while 40 or above
    means youre morbidly obese

12
Discussion Questions
  • 1)Do you think that schools have a right to send
out letters saying their child is obese?
  • 2)Should Wisconsin create soda taxes or is it
another way for the government to infringe and
dictate what we should be doing to be healthy?

13
Discussion continued
  • 3)Is child obesity due to a society that raises
children through the means of television or is it
    due to other factors?
  • 4)Should parents be prosecuted for child abuse if
    their child is severely obese?
