What is EndNote
  • Software to manage bibliographic references
  • End Note supported at University of Manchester
    (others include ProCite and Reference Manager)

How to access EndNote
  • University of Manchester has a site license
  • Available on Cluster PCs (Version 9)
  • Schools have to obtain the software from ITS
    CompShop
  • Off-site license is 55 VAT postage
    (available from Adept Science)

Uses of EndNote
  • Storing, organising and formatting references
  • Importing references from bibliographic databases
  • Creating a bibliography using the link with Word
  • Searching bibliographic databases

Organising references
  • Create your own database of references - called
    an EndNote Library (.enl files)
  • References can be formatted using Output Styles
  • Libraries are searchable
  • Each library can contain unlimited references
  • Customisable

Importing References to EndNote
  • Manually
  • Direct Export from some databases (eg Web of
    Science, ScienceDirect, Scopus)
  • Importing text files from databases using Import
    Filters
  • Using Connection Files to connect, search and
    retrieve references (- limited search facilities)

  • In EndNote click Reference, New
  • Select Reference Type (article, book, chapter,
    report etc)
  • Types details in the appropriate field (author,
    title, year etc)

  • Mark the articles of interest
  • Select the fields you want to out put
  • Click on Export to Reference software

  • Import filters allow you to import references
    from databases
  • Have to save the data as a text file
  • Each database uses a different import filter
  • Shows EndNote how to interpret the imported text
    file

  • In Word select Tools, Endnote, Format
    Bibliography
  • Choose the required Output Style from the list
  • If not there select from EndNote Output Style
    Manager -1400 styles
  • Or you can create your own style

  • In EndNote choose Edit, Output Styles, Open Style
    Manager
  • Select the required style from the list
  • Click on Show Preview to preview the style
  • EndNote website has a searchable database of
    styles

What if I have an existing database of references?
  • A conversion utility is available for Papyrus 6
    and 7 on EndNote web site
  • ProCite and Reference manager files can be opened
    directly in EndNote (choose Open from the file
    menu)
  • BibTex import utility available on the EndNote
    web site
  • Conversion utilities for other programs can be
    downloaded from the Endnote web site

Importing a tab-delimited /tagged file
  • References lists in Access, Excel, etc can be
    saved as a tab-delimited file and imported
  • Data must be prepared first
  • References in Word must be saved in Tagged format
  • Often easier to cut and paste

Recommendations
  • Keep the imported text files in case of import
    errors
  • Only use one version of EndNote to edit
  • Only have one library
  • Backup your EndNote Library regularly

  • Unicode support - multilingual text, symbols and
    other technical characters
  • Unlimited size of libraries
  • Capacity to store larger records

  • Can attach image files to records (.bmp, .tif,
    .gif)
  • Can attach application files to records
  • EndNote provides pre-formatted templates for use
    with Word for submission to journals
