Mission
  • Mid-August 2007, directive by Dr. Gerberding to
    implement a public health ethics fellowship,
    including the recruitment and selection of a
    fellow by end of FY08
  • Consult Tuskegee University
  • Work Closely with Office of the Chief Science
    Officer (OCSO)
  • Host initial planning meeting in mid-November
  • Initially start with a Faculty Fellow
  • Have Faculty Fellow develop the student program,
    in consultation with OWCD and OCSO

Fellowship Overview
  • A two year faculty fellowship based in Atlanta,
    GA
  • Competency-based fellowship
  • Has two primary components
  • Scholarly activities and/or researching
    contemporary issues in ethics
  • The creation of a teaching and mentoring program
    with Tuskegee University students
  • Engages underserved communities and leads to
    increased capacity in both organizations
  • Will have a steering committee with
    representatives from CDC, Tuskegee University,
    and outside experts

The Fellowship Goals
  • Promote the study and application of public
    health ethics
  • Engage underserved communities to spread
    knowledge of public health principles
  • Partner with state and local health departments
    to engage underserved communities
  • Share the knowledge gained through the fellowship
    with other historically black colleges and
    universities
  • Strengthen and expand the public health ethics
    curriculum and training opportunities among
    participating institutions

  • Candidate interviews with programs and with OWCD

Eligibility Requirements
  • A candidate will have the following
    qualifications
  • Senior level professor at Tuskegee University
  • Expertise in ethics, bioethics, or a closely
    related field
  • Interest in public health ethics
  • Selected as a finalist by the Tuskegee University
    selection committee
