Diffraction-Enhanced Imaging
Because of its high water content, cartilage
cannot be visualized with conventional
radiography, so cartilage destruction is
estimated by measuring the narrowing of the joint
space between bony surfaces that is normally
occupied by cartilage. Using a new x-ray imaging
technique developed at the NSLS, cartilage
degeneration can now be observed directly at high
spatial resolution.

The use of polymer thin film in technology is
increasingly widespread, but it is difficult to
generate thin films of polymer mixtures with
homogeneous surface properties. By reducing the
film thickness to less than the size of bulk
micelle, a perfectly flat surface with
two-dimensional maze-like domain structure was
prepared from a PS/PMMA diblock copolymer. Near
absorption soft-x-ray spectromicroscopy was used
to characterize the sample.
