Facts About Organ Tissue Donation
  • Presented byJennifer Moe, Donor Alliance

2
History
  • 1991 The Museum of Nature and Science partnered
with Donor Alliance to run a program called The
Science of Transplantation in the museums Hall
    of Life.
  • 2003 The museum discontinued the program due to
funding Donor Alliance adopted it, re-naming it
Transplantation Science The Facts about Organ
    Tissue Donation.

3
Program Overview
  • An educational program with the purpose to
introduce youth throughout Colorado and Wyoming
to the science behind organ and tissue donation.
  • Trained educators go into classrooms and teach an
interactive 45 minute program to grades 6-12
using a combination of teaching methods engaging
    audible, visual and tactile learners.

4
Program Overview cont
  • Classes include a combination of video, lecture
and visual teaching tools however, the majority
of time is spent at four interactive stations,
allowing students to evaluate scenarios and
    determine how organs get placed.
  • Uses a combination of plastinated and preserved
organs, students see firsthand what different
    organs look and feel like.
  • Classes are evaluated through student pre and
    post tests.

5
Program Overview cont
  • Program is recognized nationally for teaching
youth about organ and tissue donation, averaging
    60 classes per month.
  • Curriculum follows the Colorado/Wyoming middle
and high school science content standardsa
rarity among other youth education programs
supporting organ and tissue donation in the
    United States.

6
Only 45 minutes?
  • Introduction (Approx. 7 min.)
  • Introduce Donor Alliance and program (overhead)
  • Video clip with questions from kids (approx. 2
    min.)

spongy bone and other bone specimens

Only 45 minutes?
  • Becoming a Donor/Process of donation (Approx. 10
    min.)
  • Answer questions from video plus additional
    overheads
  • Introduce students to other young people impacted
    by transplantation
  • Video (5 min.)
  • Conclusion (3 min.)

10
Program cost
  • Program costs 20,000 annually.
  • Salaries of three part-time educators and their
    travel expenses
  • One class scheduler
  • Mileage
  • Materials needed to sustain program
  • Requires relatively low staff time for program
maintenance, estimating roughly 810 hours per
    month.

11
Scheduling Classes
  • Classes are scheduled based on the availability
of the educators and dates and times are
    scheduled by employed scheduler.
  • Most correspondence is done via email between the
    science teachers and scheduler
  • Two Donor Alliance volunteers seek out new
contacts in the outlying areas of Denver as well
    private schools.

12
Measurement
  • Measurement is calculated through the use of pre
    and post class questionnaires.
  • Results from questionnaires measure programs
success by the number of students who plan on
having conversations about organ and tissue
    donation with their families.
  • Results show that 66 of students taught plan to
go home and talk to their families about
    donation.
  • 58 of those students who plan to talk to their
families claim to support, or believe in, organ
    and tissue donation and transplantation.
  • 8 are still unsure.

13
Plans for the Future
  • Expansion Increase the number of classes being
taught regionally to include Colorados Western
    Slope, Wyoming and Southern Colorado.
  • Translation Translate curriculum into Spanish.
  • Revise Curriculum Modify high school curriculum,
including the video, to better suit older, Honors
    high school students.

14
Up to date results 2007
  • January Total of Students taught 630
  • February Total of Students taught 350
  • March Total of Students taught 922
  • (A 62 Increase from February!)

15
Up to date results
  • August 24, 2006 to March 22, 2007
  • 59 Schools in CO WY
  • 201 Classes
  • 5,498 Students

In summary
  • Program is recognized as a national leader in
teaching youth about organ and tissue donation.
  • The TS curriculum follows the Colorado/Wyoming
middle and high school science content
standardsa rarity among other youth education
programs supporting organ and tissue donation
    throughout the United States.
  • Transplantation Science is a program that
requires relatively low maintenance on behalf of
    Donor Alliance full-time staff.
  • Plants a seed in the minds of youth, so when
asked the question at the DMV, they will have
    already made their decision!
