2The History of Merkels
Herman Merkel started the Builders Pricing and
Management Manual in 1947 and soon the Merkels
publication became an indispensable tool in the
building and construction industry In 1978 he
sold Merkels to Thompson Publications In 1990
Johnnic Magazine Publishers took over Thompson
Publications as well as the Merkels brand In
2003 Chris Steenkamp bought Merkels from Johnnic
and developed it into the electronic
version Today the combined Merkels and Billcost
package offer everyone in the Built Environment
the opportunity to cost a project using the most
advanced formulas and up-to-date pricing
3The Definition of Merkels
Merkels is the standard reference publication
for the construction industry when it comes to
pricing a Bill of Quantities The 24 Bills of
Quantities that make up Merkels are drawn up
according to the guidelines set in the Standard
System for Measuring Building Work Merkels
guides the estimator through the complex
processes needed to determine the final rate of a
project Merkels provides labour costs, material
costs and a section which adds the components
together and calculates profit With the new
electronic version it is now possible for
subscribers/users of Merkels to download the
latest prices on a monthly basis, making Merkels
the most up-to-date and comprehensive information
available to anyone in the industry The
electronic Merkels has more than 20 000 hits per
month from the existing paying subscribers
country wide
4What are the 24 Bills of Quantities?
The Merkels Pricing Guide is divided into
sections, called Bills of Quantities. These
sections make it easier for the user to find the
relevant information. It also provides
categories for advertisers to target the
placement of advertisements and advertorial
information where the relevant specifiers and
buyers will be able to use it.
