Bridging the Gap- Increasing Student Access
and Interactivity within a Distance Education
Course Association for Canadian Community
Colleges Winnipeg, Man May 1998
2
Overview
  • This presentation will demonstrate how
  • Internal partnerships within a post secondary
institution can be used to develop highly
    interactive and accessible distance education
    course material.
  • The convergence of CD-ROM and Web based
technologies can increase student access and
interactivity within a distance education course.

3
Background
  • Pharmacology for the Acutely Ill (ACCN 1305)
  • Offered through the Advanced Studies in Critical
Care Nursing (ACCN) program at Mount Royal
    College
  • ACCN is a distance education program
  • ACCN 1305 was originally prepared for delivery in
    print based format.
  • A significant portion of the course material has
recently been converted into an inter-linked
CD-ROM / WWW site through the assistance of a
    Mount Royal College Instructional Technology
    Project (ITP) grant

4
IT Project Process
  • The Instructional Technology Project (ITP)
process consists of five inter-linked stages
  • Analysis - Establishing the course rationale and
    design criteria
  • Design - Developing the course framework
  • Development - Production of the course material
  • Implementation - Delivery of the course
  • Evaluation - An on-going process at each stage

5
IT Project Process
6
Analysis Stage
  • Establishing the course rationale and design
criteria through the development of an ITP
    proposal
  • Needs - identify the need to integrate technology
  • into a specific course or program
  • Learner - define the target audience for the
    project
  • Setting - establish where and how the project
    will
  • be used

7
Analysis Stage
  • Content - produce a course outline and define
    major
  • curriculum goals and learning
    outcomes, break the
  • content into modules (estimate
    type amount of
  • multimedia required)
  • Goal - define major goals and timelines for the
    project

8
Analysis Stage
  • Projects are internally funded
  • Approved ITP applicants serve as content experts
on the project team and usually receive
  • -computer workstation
  • -release time
  • -instructional and technical
    support

9
Analysis Stage
  • Formation of an ITP team
  • -Content Specialists
  • -Programmers
  • -Videographers
  • -Graphic Artists
  • -Instructional Designer

10
Design Stage
  • Develop a solid frame of reference for the actual
construction or development of the course by
  • 1. Establishing an overview and objectives for
    each of the content units
  • 2. Breaking the unit down into sections
  • 3. Devising evaluation strategies and instruments
    to measure user learning
  • 4. Developing instructional strategies for the
    content
  • - types of interactivities
  • 5. Flow charting the sequence of screens for each
    unit

11
Design Stage
  • 6. Storyboard/script each individual screen
  • title
  • text
  • multimedia components
  • (attached sketches/scripts of audio, video,
    graphic, and animation ideas)
  • interactions and feedback

12
Design Stage
  • Storyboard Example

  • Heart
  • Text Normal Electrical Conduction of the Heart
  • Place (click-drag) the correct labels (in
brackets) on the heart's conduction system.
  • Sinoatrial node (SA node) Atrioventricular node
    (AV node)
  • Bundle of His (BH) Left Bundle Branch (LBB)
  • Right Bundle Branch (RBB)
  • Multimedia Components Graphic 1 - Conduction
System (see attached sketch - to be generated by
    Gary)

13
Design Stage
  • Interaction/Feedback Drag the names (bolded
name section) over onto the correct section of
    the picture.
  • If correct leave the name on site until all names
    are placed.
  • If incorrect bring up the following hints and let
    them try again
  • - SA node is in the atrium
  • - AV node is between the atrium and ventricles
  • - BH is before the dissection into bundles
  • - LBB left side of the heart - RBB right side
    of the heart.
  • Second incorrect answer, place the attempted name
    into correct location.
