Dr. Lowry is the Director of the Mid-America
Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit at
the University of Kansas Medical Center
(MAPEHSU). The center is dedicated to providing
expert clinical, consultative, educational, and
referral services to improve the recognition and
treatment of childrens environmental health
problems in the mid-America region. She is also
an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the
Division of Pharmacy Practice at the University
of Missouri-Kansas City and has presented at a
variety of regional and state conferences. A
recent needs assessment performed shows that
children in the EPA Region 7 are exposed to
environmental toxins and parents and health care
professionals are concerned about these
exposures. Dr. Lowry will present information on
environmental toxins in Kansas, what the concerns
are for our children and how can we properly
prevent and treat these exposures.

Betty Bekemeier serves as Deputy Director of the
Turning Point National Program Office where her
specialty lies in public health practice system
development. Her career has been in public
health practice at the local level. She is a
member of the Quad Council on Linkages and is the
chair of this years American Public Health
Association (APHA), Nursing Section. Betty will
describe ways in which public health leaders are
facilitating progressive changes to our public
health and nursing systems, public health nurses
are making changes that reflect a more
progressive and collaborative practice, and how
our discipline supports a responsibility to
health-promoting, social reforms.

Dr. Mann is an Assistant Professor at Wichita
State University School of Nursing and practices
as a pediatrician at the Great Bend Childrens
Clinic. Past honors include Nurse Practitioner
Advocate of the Year (1999), for the State of
Kansas by the American Academy of Nurse
Practitioners, and honorary member of FHSU-NuZeta
Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau in recognition for
contributions to nursing. This presentation will
make participants aware of the leading health
risks for adolescents in the USA, cognizant of
national recommendations on evidence of
effectiveness for selected interventions related
to adolescent health risks factors, and informed
of the 2004 Kansas State Child Death Review Board
public policy recommendations for adolescent
health and safety issues.

insufficiently known and understood when though
it is critical to the health and well being of
the public. Join this award-winning author and
nurse advocate as she demonstrates effective
communication techniques that nurses can use on
an immediate day-to-day basis to educate the
public and specific groups about their
work. Bernice was on the journalism faculty at
Boston University for may year and has taught at
Brandeis University and Harvard Universitys John
F. Kennedy school of Government. She recently
was inducted into the Milwaukee Press Clubs Hall
of Fame. Bernice lives in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, where she engages in her favorite
hobby tap dancing - as frequently as possible.
