Faculty Academic Orientation August 14, 2006
  • Research Opportunities and Resources
  • Theodore Kotchen, MD
  • Associate Dean for Clinical Research

2
Acknowledgement
Joseph Hill, PhD Director MCW Research
Foundation - for generously sharing a portion
of his slide-set for this talk.
3
Goals
  • Outline the MCW Research Infrastructure
  • Identify Opportunities for Research Education
  • Describe strategies for research program
    development/funding

4
1. Infrastructural components of a strong
research environment
Adequate research space - bench space (proximity
to office, collaborators, core facilities) -
dry lab space - computational support,
internet and journal access
Support for research administration -
secretarial support (varies by department) -
guidance through the grant preparation process,
IRB application, consent forms, IACUC
requirements, biosafety issues,
radioactive materials use (Research office). -
retrieving and collating institutional
information and statistics (e.g. for
training grants, program project grants) - legal
support for inter-institutional MOUs, technology
transfer, contracts and grants with industry
partners (MCW Office of General
Counsel, Grants and Contracts Office).
5
Infrastructural components of a strong research
environment(part II)
Core facilities - basic sciences (sophisticated
microscopy, molecular biology,
protein/nucleotide identification and synthesis,
cell-sorting, histology, etc.) -
IT/informatics (database creation and
maintenance, distribution, security) -
biostatistical consultation - access to patients
and patient information - collaborative hospital
environment - varied clinical demographic
structure (e.g. Childrens hospital, VA
Hospital, private hospitals, outpatient clinic
facilities)
Diverse clinical and research faculty
Training programs - to develop junior faculty,
students, fellows, post-docs
