19
(MEAP) at IUPUI www.iupui.edu/meap
Shortly after the School was formed, it launched
efforts to attract more minority students to
engineering. The establishment in 1975 of the
Minority Engineering Advancement Program (MEAP)
was and still remains an important part of that
effort.
20
MEAP Introduction
  • Goal to enhance student interest in higher
education and to give exposure to math, science,
engineering and technology that provides the
choice of Engineering and Technology as a college
    major and a future career.

21
MEAP
  • The purpose of this presentation is to talk about
MEAP with the DIAC so that feedback may be
collected through questions, dialogue and future
    focus groups.
  • This information will assist with decisions
concerning future programming and provide a
framework for collaboration with local school
systems and industry involved in the program.
  • This feedback may also provide rationale for
requests for internal and external funding for
    future MEAP opportunities.

What do you think is needed to take MEAP to the
next level?
22
MEAP Past and Present
  • MEAP was established in 1976 in response to a
small number of minorities in the engineering
    profession.
  • MEAP has had a global mission to expose students
to the field of engineering and technology to
assist in enlarging the ranks of these
disciplines by motivating young people to attend
a college and pursue these careers.
  • In the past MEAP has had large concentrations of
100 300 Indianapolis Public School (IPS) high
school students in a summer program.

Joseph D. Kimbrew received his BSME from Prairie
View AM. He has worked at Rolls-Royce
Corporation since graduation and attended MEAP in
1976-1979 as a high school student.
23
MEAP Past and Present
  • Today MEAP is offered each summer to 75 100
students, grades 6 through 12 that are interested
in math and science related fields that may lead
to majors in engineering and technology.
  • MEAP is currently attempting to enhance
recruitment and retention of minority students
within the Purdue School of Engineering and
    Technology, IUPUI.

LaKendra Norwood received her BSEE in 2002 after
attending IUPUI and is now working at Carrier
Corporation. She is a MEAP Alumni from 1979.
24
MEAPs Revised Mission
  • MEAPs mission is to bring central Indiana,
minority grade school, middle school and high
school students to the Purdue School of
Engineering and Technology, IUPUI for year-round
    interactions.

Brad Thompson, Key Learning School and Larrisa
Jackson, Broad Ripple High School during a panel
discussion with an IUPUI McNair Scholar.
25
MEAPs Revised Mission continued
  • MEAP exposes students tovarious areas of study
    within Engineering and Technology disciplines,
the university environment and its faculty and
staff. MEAP creates and maintains an academic
environment of learning and growth while
exposing students to positive role models from
the university from within the profession.

26
MEAP Vision
  • To be a national model for providing primary and
secondary school students (grade school, middle
and high school students) exposure to engineering
and technology disciplines at the university
    level.

27
MEAP Values
  • IUPUI and its mission
  • Economic and cultural development
  • Equality of opportunity for all students
  • From the IUPUI Strategic Plan
  • A. Enroll better prepared and more diverse
    beginning students.
  • 6. Cultivate relationships with P-12 students to
    improve their preparedness and disposition
    toward continued learning (e.g., after-school
and summer experiences on campus, library
    access, credit courses).

28
MEAP Values continued
  • All students
  • The Purdue School of Engineering and
  • Technology, IUPUI faculty staff
  • A degree in Engineering and Technology
  • The profession of Engineering and Technology,
    industries and employment

Jerome Clark, a Computer and Information
Technology faculty member received a BS in
Computer Technology from IUPUI after graduating
from Broad Ripple High School and participating
in MEAP.
29
MEAP Values continued
  • Experimental learning process that cultivates and
    nurtures www.engr.iupui.edu
  • Positive role models MEAP success stories
  • Monica Brooks, BSME 84, MSME, Senior Mechanical
    Engineer, Precision Mechanical Design Group,
Lockheed Martin, Orlando, FL. Learned about MEAP
in high school and attended MEAP summer sessions
after freshman, sophomore and junior year of high
school. After Monica graduated from high school,
she received a MEAP scholarship and was the first
    graduate of MEAP at IUPUI.
  • LaKendra Norwood, BSEE 02, Facilities Engineer,
    Carrier Corporation, Indianapolis, IN. LaKendras
    perception about engineering changed after
spending one summer as a student in MEAP and two
    summers as a MEAP counselor.
