    Development Bank, 2003.
  • Of the 24 mostly Western Developed Nations
(including NA, Western Europe, Australia New
Zealand etc.) Population of 900 million, the GNI
    is 27,000 USD
  • Compare this to the fact that 1.2 billion people

1. Extreme Poverty
  • 500 million people are hungry and another 500
million are so poor that they dont consume
enough food to render them productive.
  • Because of poverty 33,000 children (mostly
under-five-year-olds) die every day due to
    preventable diseases diarrhea, measles,
malaria, and malnutrition that is more than one
    child dying every 3 seconds.
  • 55 of all child deaths (17 million deaths a
year) are just because the children are hungry.
  • Poverty is at the root of most of that which
contributes to 'children becoming at risk'.

3. Child Labor/Slavery
  • There are more slaves today than were seized from
Africa in four centuries of the trans-Atlantic
    slave trade.
  • 250 million children are forced to work
worldwide, some as slaves and some to support
    families.
  • 170 million children are working in hazardous
    conditions and unbearable hours.

4. Sexual Exploitation The Sex Trade
  • World Vision estimates that between 10 to 14
million children are victims of the sex trade.
  • An estimated 1.2 million children are trafficked
every year, and 2 million children, mainly girls,
    are believed to be exploited
  • through the commercial sex trade.
  • Of the one million prostitutes in Thailand 80
    are under 18.
  • In Zambia 2/3rds of all child prostitutes are
AIDS orphans and then they get AIDS themselves.

5. AIDS and Plagues
  • Of the 22 million people who have died of AIDS,
4.5 million of them have been children.
  • Presently there are 11 million AIDS orphans in
the Sub Sahara. That is a staggering 10, or one
in every ten children is an orphan. This is twice
as many as society can care for.
  • By 2010 there could be as many as 20 million AIDS
orphans in the Sub Sahara region.
  • In South Africa, 50 of all the teenage girls who
are now 15 years old, will be dead of AIDS in ten
    years.

  • Women and children usually comprise 80 of these
    refugee populations.
  • More than 1 million children have been orphaned
or separated from their families as a result of
    war.
  • Presently 300,000 children soldiers, some as
young as eight, are exploited in armed conflicts
and fighting some one elses war.

7. Religious Persecution
  • Muslims in Myanmar have been denied citizenship,
had their land confiscated, and have been
    compelled to provide forced labour.
  • More than 10 Million Hindus have had to flee
Bangladesh in the face of sustained persecution
    and periodic riots.
  • 200 million Christians suffer torture, prison,
and persecution for no other crime than that they
    call Jesus Lord.
