Objective of the laboratory

• Learn techniques to cultivate and identify
  bacteria
• Learn good laboratory practice

• None!
• All material required for the course will be
  available on the website
• You are required to bring a copy of the handouts
  to class
• Also on the website syllabus, schedule, study
  guide, homework, PowerPoint etc

Lab report

• Individual assignment
• Culture provided with unknown bacteria
• You have to find out which bacteria are present ?
  you decide which tests to perform
• You have to write a formal lab report
• More info on this later.

Laboratory safety

• We are dealing with bugs
• Most of them are not so dangerous but
• Wash your hands before and after the laboratory
• Wear gloves at all time
• No drinking, No eating
• No food/ drink containers on the lab bench
• Do not touch the bacteria, neither stick your
  nose on your plate

Laboratory safety

• Wear a lab coat (strictly enforced)
• Wear closed toe shoes
• Clean your bench with the amphyl prior leaving
  the lab
• Discard plates, slides pipette where indicated
• Please sign the sheet circulating in class saying
  that youve received a copy of the lab rules and
  you agree with them

Other lab rules

• Mandatory attendance policy
• Will try to accommodate if justified absence
• But if youre not here you can not do the work
• More than 4 absences E grade
• The obvious no cheating and the like
• Special needs
• Need an email address from everyone
• Make sure that you are on the class list email
  is accurate (sheet circulating during class)
