Initiative
- Legislative Authority
- Title VIII, Section 831 of the Public Health
Service (PHS) Act, as amended by the Nurse
Reinvestment Act of 2002, Public Law 107-205
authorizes projects to provide education in new
technologies, including distance-learning
methodologies.
3Purpose
- Support nursing collaboratives for faculty
development in the use of information and other
technologies - Nursing collaboratives will use healthcare
information systems to - Enhance nursing education and practice
- Optimize patient safety
- Drive improvements in health care quality

- Nursing collaboratives
- Offer state-of-the-art training sites
- Promote the awareness of the latest simulated
learning, informatics, and telehealth trends,
advances, and issues - Must include all three areas informatics,
simulated learning and telehealth in developing
an innovative faculty development plan.
5Eligibility
- Collegiate schools of nursing capable of carrying
out program goals and objectives - Eligible applicants must have a formal
partnership with one or more - Academic health centers
- Schools of nursing
- Accredited public or private institutions
- Public or private entity
6Program Accreditation
- A collegiate school of nursing must be accredited
by a body recognized by the Secretary of
Education -
- Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education
(CCNE) or - National League for Nursing Accrediting
Commission (NLNAC). -
- Both institutional and graduate nursing program
accreditations are required before the
application can be considered for funding.
7Accreditation New Programs
- New programs that are not yet accredited must
provide documentation from the Department of
Education that indicates reasonable assurance
that the program will meet the accreditation
standards of NLNAC or CCNE prior to the beginning
of the academic year following the normal
graduation date of students of the first entering
class.
8Accreditation New Programs
- New Programs should contact the Department of
Education, Accreditation and State Liaison Unit
at (202) 219-7011 and follow instructions in
application guidance. - Documentation of the assurance from the
Department of Education must be submitted at time
of application.
9Formal Written Agreements
- Describe the partnership between the lead agency
and other agencies and programs designated as
collaborative partners. - Describe the roles and responsibilities of each
collaborative partner and resources (including
dollars, space, staff, and equipment).

- Include signatures of authorized individuals from
the lead applicant and collaborative partners - Must be dated within the twelve months of the
application deadline.
11Type of Award
- Cooperative Agreement
- is a form of a Federal grant
- has substantial involvement from the Federal
government and - dominant role and prime responsibilities are with
grantee.
12Summary of Funding
- Approximately 600,000 is expected to be
available annually to fund two (2) - new projects.
13Budget
- 5 year project period
- Budgets exceeding 300,000 in a 12-month budget
period, including direct and indirect costs, will
not be considered in the competition - NOTE Applicants must submit one-year budgets
- for each of the subsequent project period years
