Title: Papaneks 6 priorities for design
1Papaneks 6 priorities for design ...if it is to
do a worthwhile job
21. Design for the Third World
With the global increase in population over the
last twenty years, nearly three billion people
stand in need of some of the most basic tools and
implements. (Papenek, 1984234)
3Solar powered cooker in India - makes the most of
available resources and appropriate technologies
Electronic voting machine to help non-literate
voters through a series of sliding discs
The WOBO project - takes into consideration that
in some areas of the world people use waste
packaging to construct buildings. They designed
beer bottles which were suitable for building
construction

training devices for disabled people.

the Retarded, the Handicapped and the Disabled
crippling diseases and accidents affect
one-tenth of the American public and their
families (20 million people) and approximately
400 million people around the world. Yet the
design of prosthetic devices, wheelchairs, and
other invalid gear is by and large still at Stone
Age level. (Papanek, 1984241)
6The Neater Eater - a device for helping people
with intention tremor feed themselves
independently
Ergonomi Design Gruppen A. Cane to reduce pain
for arthritis sufferers B. Cutlery for people
with single handed function...

83. Design for Medicine, Surgery, Dentistry and
Hospital Equipment
Most medical instruments, especially in
neurosurgery, are unbelievably crude, badly
designed, very expensive and operate with all the
precision of a steam shovel. The cost
of health care is rising astronomically.
Regardless of who absorbs these costs in the long
run, the fact remains that a great deal of the
expense can be attributed directly to bad
design. (Papanek, 1984 242-3)
9Developed by SAMS Design (London) for Novo
Nordisc Makes insulin injection discrete
Breath actuated inhaler - reduces the problems
that patients face when trying to co-ordinate
breathing and activating the device.
Pillsafe - is an electronic controlled device
for dispensing tablets, ensures that patients
receive the correct dosage at the right time

Value engineering is a sub-branch of design that
has to do with cost reduction and assessing the
value of specific parts in a machine. These
value engineering techniques could play an
important part to change the pricing of machines
and devices for laboratories. (Papanek,
1984245) Value engineering is now a requirement
for most design contracts concerning US companies

135. Systems Design for Sustaining Human life Under
Marginal Conditions
The design of total environments to maintain men
and machines is becoming increasing important
The pollution of
water and air and the problem of toxic and atomic
waste disposal also makes a re-examination of
environmental systems design necessary.
(Papanek, 1984245-6)

conditions
The Geodesic dome based on the original idea by
Buckminster Fuller
Straw bail housing - reinforced with fibreglass
filled stucco

- Many products have reached a dead end by now in
terms of further development. This has led to
additive design more and more features or
extra gadgets are added instead of reanalysing
the basic problems and evolving new and
innovative answers (Papanek, 1984246)
17A social experiment - a suburban road was lawned
off and used as a communal park
A car sharing scheme which allows participants to
use different types of transport depending on
their varying needs
Bugbugs have a fleet of 50 (three and four
wheeled pedal-powered) vehicles designed to carry
up to three passengers on fun, safe and
pollution-free journeys in London's west end
(www.bugbugs.co.uk)
A community laundry service - which provides
social areas, gym facilities and work spaces.
Using top of the range washing machines to wash
and dry all clothes - using minimal fresh water,
detergent and energy...
