access to the departmental library. Light

vicinity of the Department of Social
Medicine. Terms and conditions Payment should
accompany your registration form wherever
possible. Two weeks notice of cancellation needs
to be received in writing failure will result in
the full course fees being charged. The
Department of Social Medicine reserves the right
to cancel or postpone the course, in which case
fees, will be refunded in full. In the event of
cancellation, the University of Bristol will not
be held liable for registrants travel or
accommodation costs.

2Tutors The tutors are Health Protection Agency
epidemiologists, consultants and
specialists. Part One Principles of Health
Protection Course aims and objectives The aim of
the course is to increase understanding of the
principles of prevention and control of
infectious diseases and environmental hazards and
the management of incidents and outbreaks.
NB. Attending the course does not provide a
certificate to be on call! By the end of the
course, students should be able
to i. Describe UK
surveillance of infectious diseases and
chemical/radiation hazards ii.
Understand the legislative framework
underpinning health protection and the roles of
agencies involved iii.
Understand and describe methods used in the
control of important infectious diseases and
chemical/radiological hazards iv.
Apply key principles in the investigation and
management of environmental incidents and
infectious disease outbreaks in community and
hospital settings. Who the course is intended
for This course is intended for those who have a
health protection role, including those working
in health protection, public health,
environmental health, infection control and
primary care. It is also recommended, together
with Part Two, for public health trainees and
individuals new to working in health protection.
The course contributes to the development of
health protection competencies for the Public
Health Register.
Part Two Practice of Health Protection Course
aims and objectives Based around core health
protection themes, participants will further
develop knowledge and skills required for
specialist practice in health protection. The
course will explore current issues, hot topics
and dilemmas, recent changes in guidelines and
legislation, applying theory to practice through
exercises and workshops. Who the course is
intended for This course is a CPD opportunity
for those who have a responsibility for health
protection, including consultants or specialists
in health protection, public health and
environmental health and those on the public
health on-call rota. It is also recommended,
together with Part One, for public health
trainees and individuals new to working in health
protection. The course contributes to the
development of health protection competencies for
the Public Health Register. Services and
