SET

• Integrated surgical training under the
  direction of a surgical specialty from the
  commencement of training
• Education implies acquisition of knowledge,
  skills and attitudes to manage complex problems,
  particularly where the outcome is unpredictable
  or unknown
• Training implies acquisition of skills to perform
  tasks where the outcome is predictable or known

Applying for selection into SET

• Application for SET during PGY2 or later
• Single annual selection into each specialty
  results announced in late June early July each
  year
• May apply to multiple specialties
• No limit on number of applications
• SET training commences PGY3 or later

Applying for selection into SET

• Stage 1 a non-refundable fee applies for any
  applicant who is not a current trainee in the BST
  or SET programs, or a Fellow
• Register and meet generic eligibility criteria
• 2009 January 6 - February 20
• 2010 yet to be determined
• Generic Eligibility Criteria
• Permanent residency or citizenship of Australia
  or New Zealand at the time of registration
• General (unconditional) registration in Australia
  or general scope registration
• Consent to a full criminal history check

Applying for selection into SET

• Stage 2 non-refundable fee applies for each
  specialty applied for
• Apply for selection into one or more surgical
  specialty
• Doctors who have registered for selection and
  have been confirmed as satisfying the generic
  eligibility requirements may lodge an application
  for selection
• 2009 March 13 April 3
• 2010 yet to be determined
• Doctors must ensure that they meet the
  eligibility requirements of the
  specialty/specialties they are applying for
  (published on the College website towards the end
  of each year)

• Each of the nine surgical specialties select on
  consistent principles
• Each of the nine surgical specialties use the
  same three selection tools with similar
  weightings
• CV 15-25
• Referees 35-45
• Interview 35-45
• Short-listing for interview is based on referees
  
• reports and CVs

Training in SET

• The duration of SET is dependant on the trainee
  achieving competence as defined by the specialty,
  for most people it takes 5 or 6 years
• Seamless progression provided educational and
  clinical standards are achieved
• Clinical placements
• - trainees are allocated by the specialty Board
  to accredited hospital training posts
• - specialties and local jurisdictions liaise to
  ensure appropriate training placements
• - trainees are supervised by supervisors
  appointed by the specialty Board

• Assessment
• Assessment during surgical training includes
  combinations of Logbooks, clinical assessments,
  mid and end of rotation assessments and
  examinations
• Clinical assessments, e.g.
• Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS)
• Mini-CEX
• Procedure-Based Assessment (PBA)
• Mid and end of term rotation assessments
• Trainees are assessed on their level of
  competence across all of the nine RACS
  competencies

• the generic Surgical Sciences Examination
• a specialty specific Surgical Sciences
  Examination
• the generic Clinical Examination
• Fellowship Examination

  Examination once they have met defined levels of
  achievement in clinical experiences,
  competencies, and research
