Title: New tools for teleconsultations MediPAS
1New tools for teleconsultations MediPAS
- Dr. Vaidotas Marozas
- Institute of Biomedical Engineering
- Kaunas University of Technology
2Objective
- To develop a new affordable and integrated
software for acquisition of medical images,
analysis, teleconsultation and archiving.
3MediPAS development method
- Developed by telemedical applications group at
Kaunas University of Technology - With practical consultations from otolaryngology,
ophthalmology and pathology doctors at Kaunas
Medical University Hospital - In cooperation with Euromed Networks AB from
Stockholm - Under supervision of TietoEnator Trigon AB from
Malmo
4Features of MediPAS software
- Main features
- Image acquisition
- Image editing
- Image processing
- Review of images
- Design of databases
- General features
- Advances features
- Plug-In for Pathology
- Conferencing and discussion of images
5Acquisition of images
- Is possible to acquire image from
- analog video camera trough frame-grabber,
- digital camera trough TWAIN software interface,
- file stored on hard disc,
- database (local or remote on the server).
6Acquisition from digital camera
- MediPAS using TWAIN standard interface is
compatible to most of modern digital cameras.
Standard features of TWAIN interface enables user
to control camera from MediPAS.
7Review of images
- To facilitate review of images
- list of load images with thumbnails
- click and drag to scroll image
- left/right click or moise wheel to
ZoomIn/ZoomOut - compare side-by-side
8Image edit
- In MediPAS it is possible to
- select part of the image
- copy
- cut
- paste
- rotate image.
9Image processing
- Basic image processing in MediPAS
- brightness
- contrast
- colour saturation
- undo
- return to original image.
10Working with databases
- MediPAS supports local (MS Access) and remote (MS
SQL Server) databases. - In databases is possible to store images and
related text information. - User can easily design database forms and tables
him-self. - It is very easy to store image into database -
drag and drop.
11General features
- Languages English and Lithuanian
- Selection of toolbars Main, Image, Annotations,
Conferenc, Database) - Image information
- Full Screen.
12Advances features Plug-Ins
- There is developed solution to implement
Plug-Ins, the advanced image processing tools
according to doctors order. - We used to code image processing algorithms in
advanced software package MATLAB. - There is designed algorithm and implemented in
MediPAS as the Plug-In the tool for quantative
analysis of pathology images- Labelling Index
estimator.
13Advances features teleconferencing
- Conferencing possibilities in MediPAS
- videoconferencing using software and hardware
(Zydacron) codec - sending / receiving images
- discussion of image on common desk-top
- synchronised drawing on the same image from both
sites - storing drawings and notes into database.

26Conclusions
- MediPAS software assists doctors in
- Acquiring of digital images
- Reviewing and management of images
- Organising of visual and text data in databases
for further research - Automatic quantitative analysis of images using
specialised Plug-Ins - WEB service for pathology assist doctors in
- Making quantative assesment of pathology images
- Releases doctors from instalation and maintanence
troubles - Easy to upgrade.
27Conclusions
- MediPAS software enables cheap and simple
communications on medical expertise network to
consult complicated interpretation of pathology
images. - We hope that MediPAS software will contribute to
mutual collaboration on pathology network.
